Many students are gradually grasping the importance of school hygiene, learning how to use and maintain the toilets properly. “Before, I felt uncomfortable using the toilet, but I’ve gradually adapted. From now on, my friends and I have clean and beautiful toilets, and we don’t have to rush because of the smell and safety issues like before. Washing our hands after using the toilet also helps us protect our digestive system,” said Sung A Ly, a 5th-grade student at Dinh Lung branch school, part of Ta Phin Ethnic Boarding Primary and Secondary School.
Managing, guiding the use, and maintaining the toilets also helps children develop good hygiene habits, thereby improving their health and preventing diarrhea. "I've always wished for a new, more spacious and clean toilet, and now it has come true," shared Dù Khánh Ngần, a 4th-grade student at Ma Lé Ethnic Boarding Primary and Secondary School, happily.
Admiring the innocent smiles and hopeful eyes of the students in Dong Van during the School Hygiene Day, Ms. Mai Thi Thanh Huong, Head of External Relations at Sanofi Vietnam, expressed satisfaction with the project's achievements. “We aim to provide a positive educational environment for students. With the School Hygiene project, they can learn and develop good hygiene habits, thereby ensuring their health for studying at school and becoming useful members of society and the community in the future,” Ms. Huong confidently stated.
Looking back at the brightly lit buildings amidst the vast gray rocky plateau, the project team expressed joy and happiness, but also a sense of concern. "We want to convey a message to the teachers and students: please keep these buildings clean and beautiful, and try to change your hygiene habits for the sake of these buildings, so that the students and their families can have better health," said Mr. Vu Ngoc Anh, Head of the School Hygiene Project.
Two months after the new toilets were put into use, Lo Kim Dung, Sung A Ly, and their classmates no longer had to worry every time they used the restroom at school. From now on, they have a cleaner and safer learning environment, and the gap in learning conditions between the highlands and the lowlands seems to have narrowed.
School hygiene is part of the "Light of the School" program, implemented with the goal of eliminating dilapidated toilets and minimizing the risk of diarrheal diseases for children in mountainous areas. To date, 69 sanitation facilities have been put into use and 31 others are under construction, supporting more than 20,000 students and teachers in schools in mountainous and disadvantaged areas. This year, the Hope Foundation, with the support of the Enterogermina probiotic supplement brand, is restarting the School Hygiene project in Dong Van, Ha Giang . The project has built 20 standard toilets, supported clean water filtration systems at several schools, and promoted good hygiene habits among students.
