A shipper without a college degree became a flight attendant at an international airport.

Although he doesn't have a college degree but is constantly improving his English and communication skills, the shipper guy has become a flight attendant at Noi Bai airport.

The day he stepped into Noi Bai International Airport to start his apprenticeship, Nguyen Viet Hoang still could not believe that he had officially become an employee of this professional environment. A few months before, Hoang was still a technology motorbike taxi driver, a delivery man (shipper) and a part-time employee for a restaurant.

After more than a year of trying to learn English and improve her skills, Hoang passed the exam to become a ground attendant at Noi Bai International Airport in December 2024.

Born in 2001, after graduating from high school in Thai Binh , Hoang joined the army and was selected to join the ceremonial troupe of the People's Public Security force. In addition to training hours like other conscripts, Hoang was trained to participate in high-level ceremonies.

After nearly two and a half years in the army, Hoang left the army without any direction for his future career.

While looking for a job, he saw a restaurant in Hanoi recruiting staff. The first few days, he was assigned to work as a security guard and arrange transportation for customers. After a few days, the restaurant owner saw that he was quick and good-looking, so he assigned him a new job as a waiter.

In his free time, while other employees were scrolling through their phones, Hoang would sit and watch the cashier work. Seeing that Hoang wanted to learn, the cashier taught him how to do it.

After a while, Hoang was transferred to the cashier position. With an inquisitive and eager-to-learn attitude, he also worked as a kitchen assistant, and was then trusted with the position of assistant restaurant manager.

The job provides a stable income, without having to pay for food and accommodation, but Hoang still wants a job with more opportunities to develop his abilities.

One time, he happened to read an announcement recruiting flight attendants and ground attendants on social media. He saw that the criteria did not require a university degree, but only required English skills, voice...

“In terms of appearance, I was quite confident because when I was in the army, the appearance requirements to join the ceremonial troupe were much stricter. But I completely lacked English skills. My communication skills were also not really good,” Hoang said.

Determined to change, Hoang saved up all his savings to enroll in English classes. At the same time, he worked part-time at a restaurant to earn money for his studies.

“In high school, my English was almost zero. During my military service, my unit also created conditions for me to study English, and I made progress, but not enough to take the flight attendant exam.”

From then on, Hoang threw himself into studying. In the early days, studying was extremely difficult. The completely new knowledge was very difficult to absorb.

There were many people studying with him who shared the same goal of becoming a flight attendant. “Those who were better than me studied ahead, took the test first, and passed first. Those who were worse than me got discouraged and gave up. In the end, I was the only one left.”

Hoang still perseveres every day, hoping that “ants carry on for a long time and the nest will be filled”. “My English teacher also knows my goal, so she is very enthusiastic in supporting and encouraging me.”

Six months later, Hoang registered for the TOEIC exam but got a low score, not as expected. The result disappointed Hoang, but he still refused to give up. Hoang continued to study day and night, preparing for the exam with full concentration. “During that time, I studied so much that my hair turned gray.”

Just about 2-3 months later, he took the test again and his results improved significantly, enough to apply for a ground flight attendant position.

On the day of the exam, he felt overwhelmed when he saw that all the candidates were good people. His English score was only average compared to many candidates.

“They spoke English like the wind, their communication skills were also confident and fluent… I entered the interview room with my heart pounding and my legs shaking. The judges spoke English, I understood almost nothing, I could only stand there and laugh.”

That time Hoang failed. He thought to himself, “Is the flight attendant exam really that difficult?” but Hoang did not allow himself to give up. He continued to practice English communication with his teacher, improve his communication skills, and improve his knowledge about the industry.

“Apart from English, the hardest thing for me at that time was correcting the local accent. There were some sounds that I couldn’t pronounce correctly or well.”

At that time, Hoang still worked part-time for the restaurant. In his spare time, he also drove a motorbike taxi and made deliveries. There were days when he earned nearly 1 million VND, a very good income. But Hoang remained steadfast in his goal, not giving up his long-term goals for short-term income.

He took the exam for the second time with a relaxed and confident mindset, not because he was sure he would pass, but because he knew he could fail again so he had “nothing to lose”. But it was that confidence and relaxation that helped Hoang pass the rounds and get accepted.

The day I received the email announcing the results, Hoang was still busy serving the restaurant's customers. " Actually, I didn't have much expectation so I didn't check my email right away. When I finished my work, I opened my email and was extremely surprised to receive the notification of my admission ."

The first person Hoang told the good news to was his mother - the person who always encouraged and supported him throughout his study period.

The 24-year-old man shared that perhaps the only secret to his success is perseverance and persistence with his goals.

He said that although he had passed the exam, he was still continuing to improve his English, communication and behavioral skills to complete the job at the best possible level.
