At a shop on Pham Van Dong Street (Thu Duc City), in addition to regular fruits and lemons, the owner also imports Guangdong lemons. "These lemons are imported from the wholesale market, retailing at 50,000 VND/kg. I sell about 10-15kg a day because many people are looking for them to make homemade lemon tea," said Ms. Ngoc Lan, the shop owner.
Observations at several traditional markets such as Ba Chieu Market (Binh Thanh District), Thu Duc Market (Thu Duc City)... show that this type of lemon is individually wrapped in plastic, is large, has a thick, rough peel, and a mildly sour taste... The selling price of this lemon ranges from 50,000 to 70,000 VND/kg. This price is 2-3 times higher than that of ordinary lemons grown in Vietnam.
On social media, Guangdong lemons are also being actively advertised and sold in bulk at wholesale prices ranging from 25,000 to 35,000 VND per kilogram.
According to Mr. Dang Hung, a small trader at Thu Duc wholesale market, when handmade lemon tea was "hot," the price of lemons could reach 90,000-100,000 VND/kg due to scarcity. "Currently, there are quite a lot of lemons from Guangdong coming to the market, so the selling price has decreased. Before, I sold 60-80kg a day, but now it's about 30-40kg a day," Mr. Hung said.
According to representatives from the Thu Duc wholesale market, in recent days, a significant amount of refrigerated containers of lemons from Guangdong (China) have been arriving at the market, averaging about 12 tons per night.
Hand-pounded lemon tea is a trendy drink among young people, imported from China. When it first appeared in Ho Chi Minh City, this drink caused many young people to queue for hours just to enjoy it.
Previously, drinks like soursop tea and salted coffee also caused a sensation in Ho Chi Minh City and drove up the prices of raw materials.
