Continuing the seemingly unfinished learning journey.
Just when it seemed she would have to put her academic dreams on hold at the age of 18 to work and help support her family, Nguyen Thi Thuong (21 years old, a student majoring in Business English at Ho Chi Minh City College of Industry and Trade) is now preparing to graduate and embark on a new journey.
At the SAL scholarship award ceremony on October 18th, organized by the National Housing Organization (NHO), Nguyen Thi Thuong shared her story of overcoming numerous difficulties to continue her education.
Recalling about three years ago, when she was preparing for her high school graduation exams, Thuong said that she faced the risk of having to stop studying and work as a factory worker to help support her family.
Thuong's parents separated about 10 years ago, and she lives with her mother and younger sister. The family's livelihood depends on the precarious and meager income from her mother's farming. Therefore, Thuong's continued education at that time was a heavy burden on her mother's shoulders. Despite this, she still cherished her dream of continuing her education.
Thuong recounted that when she decided to apply for university admission, both she and her mother felt pressured, and they had a long period of "cold war" between them.
Student Nguyen Thi Thuong shared her emotional feelings at the SAL scholarship award ceremony.
After failing her high school graduation exams and not getting enough points to get into her dream school, Thuong was disappointed and planned to quit her studies and work as her family wished. However, in the midst of her despair, Thuong learned about the SAL Scholarship Program through a fellow countryman.
Thuong recounted that Bich Ngoc, a member of the SAL scholarship committee at the time, called to share: "If you don't get into this school, check your scores and apply to another school, as long as you can continue your education. Because only by continuing your education will you have the opportunity to change your future, help your family, and do the things you truly love."
Shortly after, Thuong chose to apply to the Business English program at the Ho Chi Minh City College of Industry and Trade. About two weeks later, she received news that she had been awarded the SAL scholarship.
The SAL scholarship program has supported Thuong's tuition fees for the past three years, helping to ease some of the burden on her family. "The scholarship is like a lifeline saving my dreams from sinking," Thuong shared emotionally.
After three challenging years, student Nguyen Thi Thuong is now preparing to graduate and embark on a new journey. Thuong is also the first student in the SAL Scholarship Program to graduate.
Thuong's sharing helped inspire and motivate the six students who received scholarships on the morning of October 18th, from the University of Technology, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Pham Ngoc Thach Medical College, and the University of Economics and Law.

Starting in 2020, the SAL Scholarship Program has provided numerous benefits to students studying at universities and colleges in Ho Chi Minh City.
Beyond financial support, scholarships also open up opportunities for students to learn and grow. Each student receives tuition support for the entire duration of their university or college studies (up to 5 years) and is mentored by an expert throughout the scholarship period. Monthly, students meet with experienced experts to exchange ideas and receive advice on various academic and life issues. In addition, students participate in life skills and career development training through social activities, workshops, and field trips.
Also at the ceremony, Mr. Yang Myung Chul Paul, representing the NHO Board of Directors, stated that despite many difficulties, the company continues to maintain the SAL Scholarship Program. "You are our hope. We hope that you will continue to develop in the future. When you face difficulties, we will always be here to support you," Mr. Yang said.
