The Malaysian government is stepping up efforts to strengthen national data protection through the implementation of a sovereign Artificial Intelligence (AI) cloud policy.
The move is part of broader measures to strengthen cybersecurity and ensure national control over sensitive and strategic digital information.
Malaysian Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission will immediately act on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's directive to implement the policy.
This is an initiative to secure the management and storage of government data within Malaysia’s jurisdiction. Accordingly, the sovereign AI cloud will be deployed under the guidance of the National Security Council and the Ministry of Digital to ensure the system complies with national security standards.
Speaking at an AI forum in Kuala Lumpur, Minister Fahmi said that besides ensuring a stronger data privacy ecosystem, the initiative also takes into account policy changes in several other countries.
According to him, the sovereign AI cloud will play an important pivotal role in protecting government data and safeguarding sensitive information from cyber threats.
In addition, the system will also strengthen Malaysia's digital governance sovereignty and reduce dependence on foreign cloud infrastructure.
By keeping data under national control, the Malaysian Government aims to mitigate risks associated with international data transfers and ensure confidential information is stored and handled in accordance with national laws./.
