Transporting poor people for free, motorbike taxi driver cries because of rumors of being "very rich"

"I would like to offer free rides to people with disabilities, the visually impaired, lottery ticket vendors; people who are unable to work; and unemployed people in difficult circumstances."

"I also help with out-of-gas and flat tires. Just give me a call if you need anything. The cost is just a smile," reads a sign affixed to the vehicle of a ride-hailing driver.

The message touched many passengers, who took photos and videos and posted them on social media.

The sign contained no further information, other than the driver's phone number and name. The image quickly garnered tens of thousands of views and interactions on social media.

Reportedly, the owner of the sign is Tien (born in 1996, residing in Ho Chi Minh City), a ride-hailing motorbike driver. Tien revealed that he has been in the profession for over a year.

During his work, Mr. Tien met many people from diverse backgrounds.

"Many people are in such difficult circumstances that I never thought they could be suffering so much. So I thought I should do something to help them, you could call it 'helping those in need'," Tien said.

Over the past four months, since he started offering free rides to people in need, the male driver's workday has become much busier, and his income has consequently decreased compared to before.

Every day, he wakes up early, fully charges his motorbike's battery, and then sets off to earn a living. Whenever someone calls asking for a free ride or reports running out of gas or having a flat tire, the driver stops what he's doing and rushes to help. If his motorbike runs out of battery, he'll return home to get his motorbike and continue his journey to help people.

Despite the hard work, driver Tien still dedicates his time, effort, and money to helping others (Photo: Provided by the interviewee).

"Working hard all day like that is exhausting, but I feel very happy. The elderly often ask me to drive them to doctor's appointments, back home, or to the lottery agency to buy tickets to resell."

Most of those seeking help are manual laborers in difficult circumstances. So I'm really happy to help them save money on their daily motorbike taxi fares," Tien confided, adding that he also has a regular customer, a disabled woman. Every day, at the agreed time, Tien picks her up without charging her a single penny.

Once, he gave a free ride to an illiterate man, and even enthusiastically taught him how to spell. Usually, the driver wouldn't ask too many questions about the circumstances of these special passengers, because he believed everyone had their own sense of self-respect.

Tien shared that since putting up the sign announcing free assistance for the needy, he has helped many people in the area, helping them in their daily struggles to make a living. He is happy to receive sincere smiles and thanks, but also faces considerable annoyance from malicious rumors.

"My phone number was posted on social media, so quite a few people called... to borrow money. They said that since I help people like that, I must be rich and only drive for passion. It's true that I'm rich, but rich in kindness," Tiến said with a wry smile.

At 28 years old, the driver confided that he, like any other worker, struggles to make ends meet, earning just enough to support himself and his family. Lately, the job competition and declining income have caused him considerable anxiety. However, he still tries to help others to find positive things and relieve some of the pressure on himself.

"I hope to be able to help the right people, within my capabilities. That's why I only accept fair treatment with smiles, so that life becomes brighter and lighter," Tien believes.
