Mr. T. stated that these injuries all occurred during normal activities such as walking or going up and down stairs, causing him to become increasingly concerned about the condition of his ankle. After each sprain, Mr. T. experienced difficulty walking, felt pain, and his ankle progressively weakened. Unable to tolerate the prolonged ankle pain after the third injury, Mr. T. went to the hospital for examination.
On October 17th, Dr. Nguyen Tien Loc, a specialist in Orthopedics and Traumatology at Xuyen A General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, stated that after conducting necessary clinical and paraclinical examinations, the results showed significant loosening of the patient's ankle. In particular, functional ligament tests and MRI scans revealed that the entire external ankle ligament system was completely ruptured, causing ankle instability, ankle joint degeneration, and an increased risk of recurrent injury.
Arthroscopic lateral collateral ligament reconstruction surgery was performed on the patient.
After careful consultation, the doctors decided to perform arthroscopic lateral collateral ligament reconstruction surgery. This is a modern technique with many outstanding advantages such as minimal invasiveness, reduced post-operative pain, and shorter recovery time.
Under the guidance of an arthroscopy system, doctors used specialized instruments to reconstruct the torn ligaments by grafting autologous ligament grafts made from other tendons in the knee area. This process not only restored ankle stability but also ensured that the tendons from which the graft was taken were not severely affected.
In the first few days after surgery, the patient's ankle is splinted and they are placed in a resting position to reduce swelling and facilitate tissue regeneration.
A few days after the surgery, Mr. T. was discharged from the hospital and given instructions on how to exercise. His ankle was much more stable and no longer felt loose as before. He could walk gently without feeling as much pain as he did previously. Importantly, he no longer worried about a recurrence of the injury as he did before the surgery.
Don't be careless and try to endure the pain when you have a sprain.
Dr. Loc advises people to seek timely examination and treatment at specialized hospitals when they suffer injuries. In most cases, ankle sprains can heal on their own after 3 weeks. However, about 30% of patients with sprains still require surgery to repair the injury. It is not advisable to be complacent, endure the pain, or self-medicate with unknown drugs, massage, or joint manipulation, as this can be very dangerous and complicate the doctor's treatment process later on.
"When injuries are detected early, endoscopic surgery can be applied to minimize invasiveness and reduce the risk of post-surgical complications such as infection and swelling, helping patients return to their normal lives and activities sooner," the doctor advised.
