Football expert Phan Anh Tú assessed that Vietnam U23's victory over Laos U23 was justified. Vietnam U23 is essentially the defending champion and was considered superior to their opponent.
"We entered the Southeast Asian U23 Championship with a high rating. Vietnam U23 was also in a relatively easy group, facing Laos and Cambodia in the last two matches, so we had a great advantage," Mr. Tú analyzed.
According to him, coach Kim Sang Sik can assess the opponent and find weaknesses when the Vietnam U23 team plays later (Group C only has 3 teams). In addition, the quality of the U23 squad is quite good.
The Vietnam U23 team has had a good training camp in China and is well-prepared. Overall, in this group, coach Kim Sang Sik can plan for the long term, aiming for the top spot and preserving his squad.
Regarding their opponents, the Laos U23 team knew how to approach this match without engaging in an attacking style of play against Vietnam U23. They focused on defending with a large number of players in the 16.5-meter area, causing many difficulties for the young Vietnamese team.
"Given the tactical nature of the game, it's difficult to expect the Vietnam U23 team to win by a larger margin. A 3-0 result is satisfactory. After all, this was the opening match, so the players certainly still have limitations," commented Mr. Tú.
The highlights were arguably the two goals scored by Nguyen Hieu Minh and the opening goal by Khuat Van Khang. Hieu Minh joined the attack because there was plenty of space left in the midfield.
"Furthermore, I haven't seen much creativity in this match as the opponent defended too tightly. The Vietnam U23 team will still rely on the leadership of Nguyen Thai Son and Nguyen Van Truong."
"Overall, with a squad full of experienced players who have played in the First Division and V-League, we shouldn't have difficulty achieving our goal in the group stage. To go further, we still have to rely on the skills of coach Kim Sang Sik," expert Anh Tú said.
Vietnam U23 will face Cambodia U23 at 8 PM on July 22nd at the Bung Karno Stadium. In their opening match, Cambodia drew 1-1 with Laos. Only the top team in Group C will advance to the next round.
