On June 2nd, Czech Defense Minister Jana Cernochova thanked her Slovak counterpart Martin Sklenar, who was on an official visit to Prague, for Bratislava's assistance with the Czech contract to purchase 246 CV90 tracked infantry fighting vehicles.
Earlier, at the end of May, the Czech government agreed to purchase these combat vehicles from Sweden for approximately $2.71 billion.
According to Minister Cernochova, the Czech Republic initially intended to purchase 210 vehicles, but due to rising costs, they opted to buy 36 vehicles first, with the remainder to be purchased later. Slovakia also purchased this type of infantry fighting vehicle and has established a coordinated process to facilitate the purchase by Prague.
In addition, the two countries ' Ministries of Defense will continue discussions on cooperation in maintenance services, procurement of equipment, workshops or spare parts, as well as training cooperation. Both sides want to cooperate in sharing information on vehicle inspections.
For his part, Slovak Defense Minister Sklenar welcomed the similar coordination procedures between the two sides in subsequent equipment procurement transactions, emphasizing that the more similar equipment the two countries' militaries have, the better they can maintain and use it effectively.
The contract to purchase 246 CV90 vehicles is the largest arms purchase in modern Czech history and also one of the largest national-level arms deals in the country.
