Great Unity on Public Land - Part 3: Where Great Unity Exists

More than just shelter from the rain and sun, these solidarity housing complexes on public land also create small communities where those who have suffered hardships can find empathy and support.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Tri - Head of Group 12, is also a member of the Trung Hung Great Unity residential area, My Thoi ward. He looks strong and younger than his 77 years, but he is very calm and speaks properly. He is respected, listened to and followed by the people in the area. “The people in the neighborhood see that I am old, so they are willing to accept my words. I often advise people: We come from many places, with miserable lives, gathered here to become neighbors, so we must understand, share and live in harmony with each other. The government has provided stable housing, the responsibility of each person and each household is to try to work, maintain security and order, and live well,” Mr. Tri shared.

Mr. Tri knows by heart the names and ages of nearly 100 people in this special residential area. He remembers clearly which families make a living by selling lottery tickets, collecting scrap, driving Honda motorbikes... Every job is noble and commendable, as long as they work hard and take care of their families. Children are allowed to go to school, not following their parents to make a living like before. He is nearly 80 years old but still diligently drives a Honda motorbike, raising his grandchildren to adulthood. Near Tet, he tells everyone to clean up their houses and neighborhoods, hang flags outside the gates... Families that have parties are allowed to set up tents in the residential area, but limit loud singing. After 8 p.m., they must return the quiet space to the neighbors to rest.

The Thoi Thanh Hamlet Great Unity Residential Area, My Thoi Ward is a place to resettle people affected by landslides in the Cai Sao Bridge area. Ms. Tran Ngoc Diem said: “My neighborhood was all affected by landslides and lost their homes. The 15 households that were relocated to this great unity area since August 2020, looking back, they are all old neighbors. Having gone through natural disasters and hardships together, and having been close friends in the past, the neighborly relationship has become even closer. One day, I went to work, no one looked after the house, so I asked the neighbor to keep the key for me. I went to the market, and several other families sent me food. When it was time to take the children to school, this person took the children for another family... No one complained about anything, it was just a matter of "when the lights go out, the fire goes out" and we conveniently supported each other."

Mr. Hua Chan Ngoan, Head of Group 3, who often visits this place, said: “When being granted houses on public land, all households agree with the locality, escaping the list of poor and near-poor households. Each household tries to work honestly, appreciates the care of the State, and helps each other in life. Security and order in the residential area are also guaranteed, there are almost no social evils or crimes.”

In 2023, 2,000m2 of public land will become a solidarity house area of Phu Huu commune, with 20 houses, each 40m2 , with concrete and steel foundations, brick floors, walls, and corrugated iron roofs... The total cost of the project is more than 1.7 billion VND, from socialized sources, of which An Giang Lottery One Member Limited Liability Company supports 1 billion VND; Phung Toan Construction One Member Limited Liability Company supports part of labor costs, material and equipment discounts... equivalent to 100 million VND; Hoa Phat Tai Construction Limited Liability Company supports survey costs, preparing economic and technical reports, equivalent to 100 million VND; Hiep Phat Chau Phu Limited Liability Company supports 600m3 of sand, equivalent to 81 million VND...

This housing area is located behind Dong Duc Communal House, less than 100m from Phu Thanh Hamlet People's Committee Office. Most of the people living in this housing area are elderly, sick, and have difficulty traveling. Mr. Le Trieu Phu - Head of Phu Thanh Hamlet informed: "It is difficult for healthy people to find work in rural border areas, poor communes like Phu Huu, let alone those with health and age limitations! Therefore, we give phone numbers to households, when they are sick, need support... they can call, the Hamlet Leadership Board will find a way to support, bring it to their home. We are close to the households in that way."

In the afternoon, in the residential areas, children chattered and played on bicycles. Adults sat on stone benches in front of the yard, asking each other about meals, the market, and their jobs. They helped each other with the smallest things like a bundle of vegetables, a kilo of rice, a glass of water, words of encouragement when someone was sick or in trouble, or helping when a family had a party or a wedding... Human love formed a strong bond, helping households that were once unstable to now be more stable in life.

Many people jokingly say that "only after moving here do we realize we have real neighbors." But that joke is so true. Each person has a different situation and a different job, but they all share the same awareness of preserving a civilized lifestyle, considering village and neighborhood relationships as valuable assets. For those who are attached to the grassroots such as village and hamlet leaders, commune and ward officials, each housing area is not only a project completed on schedule but also the result of persistent advocacy, persuasion and companionship with the people. They have witnessed each household from the fear of their house collapsing during the rainy season to the days of opening their doors to welcome the morning sun in their new homes. The joy of the people is also a reward for those who knock on the doors of each benefactor day and night, asking for each iron bar and each bag of cement to build these loving homes.

In many residential areas, Long Xuyen Electricity Company implements the entire power supply system; Long Xuyen Water Supply Company takes care of the entire water supply system. Many companies and businesses support cement, stone, and carry out the embankment and leveling part. Mr. Nguyen Chi Nam - owner of a vegetarian food shop supports the painting of concrete in the My Khanh residential area, worth 60 million VND. A philanthropist supports 190 cabinets, tables, chairs of all kinds... For organizations and individuals who contribute, the joy does not lie in having their names written on the gratitude board but in the moment they witness households moving into new houses with smiles that they themselves will never forget. Many businesses share that, when they see with their own eyes the elderly and children living in makeshift houses, precarious in the wind and rain, they understand that their contribution, no matter how small, can become a support for a family to stand up.

When a community is formed from sharing, the value of each house goes beyond material things. It becomes the foundation for social stability, contributes to preventing social evils, and creates a healthy environment for children to grow up with kindness. And it is from these simple houses that the spirit of great solidarity - a core value of the nation - is nurtured through very ordinary actions but warmer and more lasting than any words.
