On January 18th, in the United Kingdom, Oxford University and Tam Anh Research Institute (TAMRI), part of the Tam Anh Hospital System, announced the signing of a cooperation agreement for scientific research exchange and medical training.
Tam Anh General Hospital System possesses many modern and unique medical devices in Vietnam, including the successful ownership and mastery of brain and spinal cord surgery techniques using the Modus V Synaptive robot with artificial intelligence (AI). The hospital team performed a record of over 100 difficult and dangerous brain and spinal cord surgeries in 2024, reviving and restoring healthy lives to patients.
This marks the first bilateral collaboration between Oxford University, a world- renowned university, and a research institute within a prestigious general hospital system in Vietnam.
The signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was witnessed by Mr. Do Minh Hung, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Vietnam to the United Kingdom; Mr. Mark Kent, former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom to Vietnam; numerous leading professors from Oxford University; and leaders of the Tam Anh Research Institute and the Tam Anh General Hospital System.
Creating evidence-based healthcare solutions.
This memorandum of cooperation marks a formal commitment between the University of Oxford and the Tam Anh Research Institute, Tam Anh General Hospital System, aimed at creating evidence-based healthcare solutions, contributing to shaping healthcare decisions, improving treatment effectiveness, and bringing practical benefits to the community.
Representing the Oxford University faculty and leadership, Associate Professor Proochista Ariana – Head of International Development at Oxford University – stated that the focus of the collaboration will be on conducting fundamental research and developing solutions to address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
"Oxford University highly values this collaboration and the opportunity to learn from our Vietnamese colleagues. We aim to build a research culture and capacity, generating scientific evidence to support policy planning and improve the health of the Vietnamese people."

Present at the event, Professor David A. Clifton of Oxford University, a world-leading expert on medical artificial intelligence (AI), expressed his expectations for collaborative development of medical AI between the UK and Vietnam to improve access to healthcare in both countries.
"Collaborating with Vietnamese healthcare businesses will foster innovation in this field. Vietnam has the opportunity to build new systems, apply advanced AI technology, and lead the Southeast Asian region," Professor David A. Clifton shared.
Vietnamese Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Do Minh Hung, said he supports international cooperation activities between Vietnamese scientific organizations and international partners, especially the cooperation between Tam Anh Research Institute, Tam Anh General Hospital System, and Oxford University - leading prestigious institutions in their respective fields in each country.
The Ambassador expressed his hope that the cooperation between Tam Anh General Hospital System and Oxford University would bring about increasingly better solutions aimed at improving the quality of medical examination, treatment, and healthcare for the people of Vietnam.
Representing the Tam Anh General Hospital System, Dr. Phuong Le Tri, Executive Director of the Tam Anh Research Institute, emphasized that the development goal of the Tam Anh medical system is to access mainstream, modern scientific trends from around the world to improve the effectiveness of medical examination and treatment and patient safety, and to provide better healthcare for the community.
Therefore, Tam Anh places special emphasis on accessing scientific research on new medical solutions, strengthening cooperation and exchange with major medical centers around the world such as Oxford University.

According to the memorandum of understanding, the strategic cooperation between Oxford University and the Tam Anh Research Institute will focus on developing advanced training courses and enhancing the skills of researchers and medical professionals, helping them achieve success in scientific research on diagnosis, treatment, and healthcare.
In addition, both sides will strengthen exchange activities, internships, and participation in specialized seminars. The expert and student exchange program will promote mutual learning, provide opportunities for individuals to experience new research environments, share expertise, and build sustainable collaborative networks.
Oxford University and the Tam Anh Research Institute are also committed to sharing non-confidential knowledge and specialized materials to keep up with the latest medical advancements, enhance common understanding, and foster groundbreaking research ideas.
According to Dr. Phuong Le Tri, the collaboration with Oxford University is a significant step in the development strategy of Tam Anh General Hospital System and Tam Anh Research Institute, as the combination of international experience and domestic research capabilities will promote the development of Vietnamese medicine.
