On the night of July 1st, Ukrainian armed forces attempted to attack the Crimean Peninsula, but Russian air defenses successfully repelled the attack. According to local reports, the attack targeted the eastern part of the peninsula, possibly the Crimean Bridge. Several targets were reportedly intercepted in the Kherson region and the Kerch city area of Crimea.
The Ukrainian military reportedly launched US-made Storm Shadow missiles and decoy missiles to locate the deployment area of Russian air defense systems. Debris from the Storm Shadow missiles is believed to have fallen in the area of the village of Shelkino.
In its daily summary, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that it had destroyed a total of eight Storm Shadow missiles over the past day.
Earlier, on the evening of July 1st, Ukraine also launched another attack targeting the western coast of the peninsula, and Russian air defenses immediately activated in Sevastopol.
Immediately following the Ukrainian Armed Forces' attack on the Crimean Peninsula, the Russian military retaliated with missile strikes on Ukrainian airfields. Russian Iskander missiles targeted Kanatovo Airport in the Kirovograd region, likely hunting Ukrainian Air Force aircraft used in the Crimean attack. Loud explosions were heard at the airport.
The following morning, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that Russian forces had attacked Ukrainian Air Force aircraft, causing damage to the parking area and some infrastructure of the military airfield, but provided no further details.
Earlier, on July 1st, the Russian military launched missile attacks on a military airfield in Mirgorod, Poltava region. At least two or three Iskander cluster munition missile attacks were reported at the airfield. A large fire was also reported in the area.
The attack on Mirgorod airport was coordinated by drones. These drones were undetected by Ukrainian air defenses and were operating approximately 200 km from the Russian border. Images released show heavy losses for the Ukrainian Air Force.
The attack resulted in the Ukrainian army losing six aircraft simultaneously. Two Ukrainian Su-27s were destroyed and burned to ashes. Four other Su-27s were severely damaged by cluster bombs.
The publicly released video also showed dummy aircraft painted on the parking area to distract Russian forces, but these did not help the Ukrainian army avoid losses.
The loss of six aircraft is a major setback for the Ukrainian Air Force.
