On August 31, the People's Committee of Kien Giang province announced that Mr. Lam Minh Thanh, Chairman of the People's Committee, had reached conclusions at a briefing meeting on combating IUU fishing and preparing for the 5th meeting with the European Commission (EC) inspection team.
Efforts to combat IUU fishing in Kien Giang have yielded positive results, but there are still fishing vessels violating regulations by losing their navigation links and crossing maritime boundaries; the registration, inspection, and licensing of "three-no" fishing vessels (no registration, no inspection, and no fishing license) in the locality are still slow.
Mr. Lam Minh Thanh suggested that the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development focus all resources on completing the management dossiers for fishing vessels, especially for the group of "3-no" fishing vessels; strictly inspect fishing vessels arriving at and departing from ports and supervise the unloading of goods at ports.
Local authorities are focusing on decisively addressing violations related to illegal fishing in foreign waters; and strictly penalizing fishing vessel owners and captains who disconnect vessel tracking devices while fishing at sea.
Local authorities are particularly accelerating the registration and issuance of fishing licenses for "three-no" vessels (those with no fishing permits, no licenses, and no permits) with a length of 6m to under 12m, contributing to combating IUU fishing and helping to lift the EC's yellow card sooner.
