Teach children with disabilities with all your heart.

Teacher Le Thi Linh is teaching children with disabilities how to distinguish between different types of fruit.

Witnessing a sewing lesson taught by Ms. Le Thi Huong, from the Sewing and Handicrafts Department of the Thanh Hoa Vocational School for Disabled and Disadvantaged Youth, we were truly impressed by her dedication to her students. The class consists of 12 students, all with disabilities, including hyperactivity, autism, and congenital deafness and mutism, of varying ages. Therefore, Ms. Huong has to teach very slowly, speak loudly and clearly, and often uses sign language in her instruction.

Instead of following a standardized lesson plan, Ms. Huong adapts her teaching methods to suit each student's age and learning ability. She even personally guides them through simple tasks like threading a needle, placing fabric pieces, and sewing neatly. After their training, Ms. Huong has often been moved to tears witnessing the remarkable progress of her students. From being self-conscious, they have become cheerful, sociable, and, most importantly, capable of independently sewing complete products. These seemingly simple tasks require immense effort from both the teacher and the students with disabilities.

Student Do Thi Hue from Ha Binh commune shared: “I have a mobility disability and there are times when I can't help but feel self-conscious and inferior. However, here I have received the care and attention of the teachers at the school. Especially teacher Le Thi Huong, who always encourages and comforts me, helping me to live more positively and learn sewing so that I can have a stable job in the future.”

In a conversation with teacher Le Thi Huong, we learned that after graduating from Hung Yen University of Technology and Education, she started working at the school from its early days. Eighteen years of dedication to underprivileged children have left her with unforgettable memories. When she first started, she faced many difficulties in interacting with and teaching students with disabilities. However, driven by her love for the children, she continuously improved her professional skills and participated in numerous training courses on teaching children with disabilities, which helped her become more confident in each lesson.

“Each student is a different lesson plan, so to stay committed to this profession, in addition to expertise, teachers must have a special love for children, always treating them as their own children. From there, they must be persistent, patient, encouraging, comforting, and motivating to help students overcome difficulties, pay attention to their studies, and thus understand the lessons and become more interested in each class. The progress of the students is not only the joy of the teacher but also the boundless happiness of the family in helping their children integrate into the community,” Ms. Huong said.

That's also the sentiment of teacher Le Thi Linh, who works at the Thanh Hoa Center for the Relief of Disabled Children. Speaking about how she became involved with the center, Ms. Linh shared: “Two years ago, I accidentally came across the Facebook page of Ms. Tran Thi Dung, a teacher at the center. Seeing the activities Ms. Dung shared about these underprivileged children, I felt a deep sense of empathy and compassion for them, and the desire to work alongside them in teaching them has always been strong within me.”

To gain knowledge about teaching children with disabilities, she spent a lot of time attending specialized courses on teaching methods for students with disabilities. Although she had acquired basic knowledge, in the early days of working in an environment with students who were physically older but had the minds of children, some even unexpectedly hit her, leaving her with swollen hands and feet. The job was stressful, and at times she considered quitting to find a less demanding job. However, seeing the innocent smiles of children with autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, developmental delays, and difficult circumstances, she was always torn between continuing or quitting. And with love for these less fortunate children, she gradually overcame the difficulties, teaching and guiding them daily with the hope of helping them develop life skills and integrate into the community.

Her most unforgettable experience was with the twin brothers D.M.T. from Ha Trung commune. When they arrived, they were always screaming, running around wildly, hurting themselves, and even hitting those around them. Initially, she struggled to figure out where to begin, but with the support of the teachers at the center and through her perseverance and patience, the twin brothers D.M.T. have now made significant progress in their daily lives.

It's impossible to fully describe the hardships and difficulties faced by Ms. Huong, Ms. Linh, and many other teachers who tirelessly dedicate themselves to teaching children with disabilities. For them, the greatest joy is seeing their students take care of themselves, express love and compassion for those around them, and witnessing the tears of parents as they see their children progress daily. This is the motivation for them to continue their commitment to these less fortunate children, helping them overcome feelings of inferiority and self-doubt so they can integrate into society.
