Teaching disabled children with all my heart

Teacher Le Thi Linh in a class teaching disabled children how to distinguish between fruits.

Witnessing a sewing lesson taught by teacher Le Thi Huong, Faculty of Sewing and Fine Arts, Thanh Hoa Vocational College for Disabled Youth with Special Difficulties, we were truly impressed by her dedication to her students. The class has 12 students who are all disabled, hyperactive, autistic, deaf and mute at different ages. Therefore, Ms. Huong has to teach very slowly, speak loudly, clearly and sometimes even use sign language in teaching.

Not following a common lesson plan, but for Ms. Huong, depending on each student's age and ability to absorb, there are different ways of communication, she even directly holds hands, guides simple tasks such as how to thread the needle, place each piece of fabric, how to sew beautifully. After a period of study, many times Ms. Huong could not hold back her tears when witnessing the remarkable progress of her students, from self-conscious students, now happy, sociable and especially proactive in sewing finished products. Things that seem simple to normal people are a great effort for both teachers and disabled students.

Student Do Thi Hue in Ha Binh commune shared: “I myself have a physical disability and sometimes I cannot avoid feeling self-conscious and inferior, but when I come here, I receive the attention of the teachers at school. Especially teacher Le Thi Huong always encourages, comforts, helps me live a more positive life and learn sewing so that I can have a stable job in the future.”

Talking with teacher Le Thi Huong, we learned that after graduating from Hung Yen University of Technical Education, she started working from the early days of the school's establishment. 18 years of working with disadvantaged children have left Ms. Huong with unforgettable impressions. When she first started her "career", she encountered many difficulties in communicating and teaching with disabled students. However, with her love for children, she has constantly improved her professional qualifications and participated in many training courses on teaching disabled children, helping her become more confident in each class.

“Each student is a different lesson plan, so to stick with the profession, in addition to expertise, teachers must have a special love for children, always considering students as their own children. From there, perseverance, patience, encouragement, comfort, and encouragement to motivate students to overcome difficulties, study attentively, thereby understanding the lesson and being more interested in each lesson. The progress of the students is not only the joy of the teachers but also the boundless happiness of the family in the journey of helping the children integrate into the community,” said Ms. Huong.

That is also the sentiment of teacher Le Thi Linh, working at the Thanh Hoa Disabled Children Rescue Center. Talking about the opportunity to join the center, Ms. Linh shared: “Two years ago, I accidentally found the Facebook page of Ms. Tran Thi Dung, a teacher at the center. Looking at the activities Ms. Dung shared about these unfortunate children, I felt a lot of sympathy and love for them and the intention to accompany and teach them always urged me.”

To gain knowledge about teaching children with disabilities, she spent a lot of time attending specialized classes on teaching methods for students with disabilities. Although she was equipped with basic knowledge, in the first days of working in an environment with physically large students, but mentally like children, some of them even unexpectedly fought back, causing her limbs to swell. The work was stressful, and many times she intended to quit her job to find another, easier job. However, looking at the innocent smiles of children with autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, developmental disabilities, unable to walk normally and in difficult circumstances, made her always wonder whether to continue working or quit. And with her love for the less fortunate children, she gradually overcame the difficulties, teaching and guiding them every day with the desire to help them gain life skills and integrate into the community.

Her most unforgettable memory was with the twin brothers Đ.MT in Ha Trung commune. When they came here, they always screamed, ran around, hurt themselves, and even hit people around them. At first, she was confused about where to start, but with the support of the teachers at the center and with perseverance and patience, the two brothers Đ.MT have now made progress in their daily activities.

It is impossible to describe all the hardships and difficulties of Ms. Huong, Ms. Linh and many other teachers who are working hard every day to teach children with disabilities. For them, the greatest joy is when students know how to take care of themselves, show love to those around them, and even see the tears of parents when they see their children progress every day. That is the motivation for them to continue to stick with and accompany the less fortunate children in life, helping them overcome their inferiority complex and self-consciousness to integrate into life.
