To "survive" your first year of university...

Báo Quốc TếBáo Quốc Tế22/09/2023

The 2005 cohort has officially entered university. The university environment is very different from high school. What should students pay special attention to in order to make their first year of university an exciting and successful start?

The trap of freedom

One of the "dreams come true" when entering university is "escaping" the control of family schedules, especially for new students who live far from home.

University professors (whether academic advisors or department heads) do not manage students as strictly as teachers in high school.

Furthermore, with familiar arguments like "18 is adulthood," and "18 is legally responsible," young men and women become even more confident in embarking on their journey to "find freedom." Many vibrant plans have been put forward, primarily to realize the aspirations of their student years.

However, alongside scientifically structured schedules that balance studying, relaxation, and sports, or useful plans such as enrolling in short-term courses/programs, joining skill-building clubs, and improving foreign language skills, there are still many cases where students get carried away with fleeting passions, neglect their studies, and underestimate the importance of improving their skills.

Perhaps we should also know that: every year, while many new students enroll, many others also defer their studies or drop out midway for various reasons.

One of the reasons is that you haven't been able to control your own love of play and laziness. Don't let the trap of freedom take hold of you.

Take time to explore the city, experience the joys of youth, but remember to keep your studies at the center of all your activities.

Diligently and passionately pursuing new knowledge is the most important path during this period. The brilliant future is built upon our ability to accumulate knowledge from the quiet efforts and struggles of the present.

Work smarter

Gone are the days of heated social debates about whether students should work part-time, and how such work might affect their studies.

In fact, it seems that the rate of students working part-time has been increasing over the years, in both private and public universities.

Previously, the primary reason students decided to find part-time jobs was to earn extra income to cover tuition fees and living expenses; however, today, the reasons are much more diverse.

Discovering one's potential, enhancing communication skills, improving teamwork abilities, applying learned theories to real-world situations, experiencing the workplace environment, connecting with future career opportunities, building personal brand, and unleashing creative passions… these are just some of the benefits that students today can gain from part-time work.

Furthermore, an advantage for students today is that the information and communication space in general, and social media in particular, is more open than ever before. This has made the process of finding part-time work easier and more convenient.

However, the other side of the reality also shows that many students mistakenly believe that temporary success in part-time work is a criterion or measure of success compared to the goal of completing their university program.

Sustainable success requires a solid foundation of knowledge – something that universities provide to students scientifically, through meticulously designed and rigorously accredited training programs and a faculty of experienced professionals.

Let's not be too quick to get caught up in stories of "dropping out of university and achieving entrepreneurial success." Such cases do exist, but they are not numerous, if not a minority.

Think carefully, so you won't have any regrets about your university journey filled with expectations and effort.
