Having just finished selling the second batch of frogs raised in his rice paddies, Mr. Hoai is already preparing to raise the next batch. After two cycles of raising and selling frogs raised in the rice paddies, his model has become well-known, and he can't raise enough frogs to meet demand. The people of Thanh Boi village jokingly call him "Hoai the frog farmer"...

Last summer, during a trip back to his village, the young man from Tien reminisced about his childhood days of fishing and catching frogs in the rice paddies. Seeing the vast rice fields stretching as far as the eye could see, Hoai came up with the idea of raising frogs in his own rice paddies.

“In early July 2024, I started implementing my initiative, releasing the first batch of 3,000 frogs into a 500m² rice paddy. Before that, I had experience raising commercial frogs in ponds while working at Quang Nam Aquatic Seed Joint Stock Company. However, the quality of the frogs was not high; the meat was soft and mushy, not tasty. Frogs raised in rice paddies like this have firmer meat, closer to the meat of wild frogs,” said Mr. Hoai.

According to Hoai, before releasing the frogs, he chose a rice field in front of his house with sufficient water and convenient drainage. He stretched a high net to enclose the frogs in a field, preventing them from escaping. The young man in his 20s utilizes food and agricultural by-products from his own farm to feed the frogs.

After more than a month of raising them, Mr. Hoai came up with the idea of using lights to attract mayflies and insects at night. This provides an abundant food source for the frogs, helping them grow faster and produce tastier, firmer meat. At the same time, it eliminates a large number of insects that damage rice and other crops. The organic waste produced by the frogs helps his rice plants thrive, saving on fertilizer and chemical pesticides, and ensuring environmental hygiene.

Having purchased froglets from Quang Nam Aquatic Seed Joint Stock Company, after raising 3,000 frogs for 4 months, he earned over 50 million VND. Selling them at 70,000 VND/kg (1 kg is equivalent to 4 adult frogs), Hoai's rice field-raised frogs were popular with many people, selling out completely from the first trial.

[ VIDEO ] - Mr. Nguyen Van Hoai shares his idea for an intensive frog farming model in rice fields:

Due to its high effectiveness, Mr. Hoai kept the frog breed, expanded the model, and released 5,000 frogs in the second batch at the end of October 2024. As expected, the frogs were bought up by many people in and outside Tien Chau commune who came directly to his farm, bringing him nearly 90 million VND.

Vo Van Hoai sells the large frogs for meat, and releases the smaller ones he catches to continue raising them. Seeing the effectiveness of this frog-raising model in the fields, many households in the surrounding area have sought out the young man to learn from his experience.
