The 0-0 draw against the Netherlands at 2:00 AM on June 22nd still keeps the French national team firmly in the race for a place in the EURO 2024 Round of 16. After two matches, coach Didier Deschamps' team has 4 points, ranking behind the Netherlands (also with 4 points) due to an inferior goal difference.
In the final match, France will face Poland – who are already eliminated – while the Netherlands must battle Austria, who still have a chance to advance after their 3-1 victory over Poland. Therefore, France has a significant advantage not only in advancing but also in securing first place in Group D.
However, there are still issues when looking at France's poor statistics.
France has only scored 1 goal in 2 matches at EURO 2024.
The team nicknamed "The Gallic Roosters" and the Netherlands have just created the first goalless match at EURO 2024. Prior to that, the tournament had seen 20 consecutive matches with at least one goal scored. In fact, the figure of 54 goals in 20 matches (an average of 2.7 goals per game) was even considered high in a tournament that is increasingly characterized by tactical maneuvering.
However, the French national team has gone against this trend, with very few goals scored in matches under coach Deschamps.
France beat Austria 1-0 in their opening match, then drew 0-0 with the Netherlands. Thus, the "Gallic Roosters" only scored a single goal in their two matches, averaging 0.5 goals per game, less than 20% of the tournament's average goals.
At EURO 2024, only two teams remain without a single player scoring a goal. These are Belgium, who lost 0-1 to Slovakia in their opening match, and France. Although France did score one goal, it was an own goal by an Austrian player.
The French national team depends on Mbappe's inspiration.
Up to this point, the top strikers of the reigning World Cup runners-up, such as Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, and Ousmane Dembele, have all been disappointing. None of them have scored or assisted, despite having had numerous opportunities.
If the Belgian players score at least one goal in their second match against Romania, France will become the only team at EURO 2024 that has yet to have a goalscorer.
With only one goal scored in two matches, France is only on par with weaker teams like Serbia and Hungary (both at the bottom of the table).
The 90 minutes against the Netherlands explained France's poor scoring record, as Coach Deschamps' team lacked direct attacking moves to score. France has many technically gifted strikers who can create breakthroughs, such as Dembele, Marcus Thuram, and Griezmann, but they play disjointedly, relying heavily on individual brilliance.
Without the "spark" Mbappe, France's attacking play was monotonous, making it easy for the Netherlands to anticipate their moves.
Kingsley Coman (number 20) was also lackluster.
The image of Olivier Giroud clumsily controlling the ball with his back and letting it roll inexplicably in the 82nd minute perfectly encapsulated France's problem. Giroud played a major role in France's 2018 World Cup victory, even though he didn't score or even have a single shot on target in all seven matches of the tournament.
However, six years after winning the World Cup, France still has to use an aging striker like Giroud. This shows that, despite having many good midfielders and wingers, coach Deschamps is lacking a reliable center forward capable of overwhelming the opponent's defense.
Another reason for France's low goal tally lies in coach Deschamps' overly cautious and disciplined tactics. Throughout his 10 years coaching France, Deschamps' greatest hallmark has been his ability to manage the dressing room and his pragmatic, though sometimes rigid, style of play. The "Gallic Roosters" don't attack in a counter-attacking fashion, but rather play very defensively, only choosing the right moments to accelerate. This pragmatism has helped Deschamps' France reach the finals in three of the last four major tournaments, but it has also sometimes caused the team to lack creativity and become rigid.
However, the French team still has a good chance of topping Group D despite scoring fewer goals. That's probably all Coach Deschamps needs!
