Dong Nai Children's Hospital said that as of October 22, the health condition of MKC (78 days old, residing in Phu Vinh commune, Dong Nai province), born prematurely at just over 24 weeks of pregnancy, has passed the critical stage, vital signs are stable, moving and breastfeeding well, and can be discharged next week.
This is one of the very few cases of extremely premature babies at 24 weeks of gestation being kept alive nationwide.
Previously, on August 5, the patient was admitted to the hospital in a state of extremely premature birth, weighing only 900 grams. According to the family, the pregnancy was normal, but at the 24th week, the mother showed signs of bleeding and contractions, so she was taken to the hospital to give birth naturally to a baby boy.
The boy was then transferred to Dong Nai Children's Hospital for emergency treatment.
Here, patients are given extremely premature infant care techniques such as incubator, CPAP breathing support to expand the lungs, ensuring oxygen supply in the blood, intravenous feeding, and early feeding with breast milk.
Doctor Huynh Thi Thanh, Deputy Head of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Dong Nai Children's Hospital, said that during the 78 days of accompanying and fighting for the newborn's life, the team of doctors and nurses had gone through many difficulties.
Doctors must weigh every milliliter of feeding fluid, ensuring temperature and humidity to avoid hypothermia and dehydration, and strictly control infection.
However, due to incomplete body parts, the patient has experienced many infections, many physiological apneas, pneumonia, and invasive breathing with a ventilator... Up to now, the patient has stopped having physiological apneas, responded well, and gained 1.8 kg.

“The baby was born extremely prematurely, so all of his organs, such as the immune system, circulatory system, heart, intestines, and respiratory system, were not yet fully developed. Therefore, throughout this time, the medical team has worked tirelessly, taking care of him every day so that he can develop fully. Currently, there have been no recorded complications in the baby's development,” said Dr. Thanh.
According to doctors, there are many causes of premature birth such as high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, infections, and amniotic membrane inflammation.
In addition, pregnant women are directly or indirectly exposed to tobacco and addictive substances; have an inappropriate eating and resting schedule during pregnancy; are not old enough to be mothers; and do not have regular prenatal check-ups.
Doctors recommend that during pregnancy, pregnant women should absolutely avoid factors that can lead to premature birth, and regularly have prenatal check-ups to monitor and detect early cases of premature birth or threatened premature birth in order to have measures to prolong the pregnancy./.
