According to Dong Nai Children's Hospital, as of October 22nd, the health condition of patient MKC (78 days old, residing in Phu Vinh commune, Dong Nai province), who was born prematurely at just over 24 weeks of gestation, has passed the critical stage. Vital signs are stable, and the baby is moving and feeding well. The child may be discharged next week.

This is one of the very few cases nationwide of an extremely premature infant born at 24 weeks of gestation who has survived.

Previously, on August 5th, the infant was admitted to the hospital in an extremely premature state, weighing only 900 grams. According to the family, the pregnancy proceeded normally, but at the 24th week, the mother experienced bleeding and contractions, so she was taken to the hospital for a normal delivery of a baby boy.

The boy was then transferred to Dong Nai Children's Hospital for emergency treatment.

Here, the infant receives advanced neonatal care techniques such as incubator placement, CPAP lung support to ensure adequate oxygen levels in the blood, intravenous feeding, and early breastfeeding.

Dr. Huynh Thi Thanh, Deputy Head of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Dong Nai Children's Hospital, said that during the 78 days of accompanying and fighting to save the newborn's life, the medical team faced many difficulties.

Doctors must carefully consider every milliliter of nutritional fluid, ensuring the correct temperature and humidity to prevent hypothermia and dehydration, and strictly control infection.

However, due to the incomplete development of their bodily systems, the child has experienced numerous infections, many episodes of physiological apnea, pneumonia, and required invasive ventilation with a ventilator. Currently, the child has overcome the episodes of physiological apnea, is responding well, and has gained 1.8 kg.

"Because the infant was born extremely prematurely, all its organs, such as the immune system, circulatory system, cardiovascular system, intestines, and respiratory system, are still underdeveloped. Therefore, throughout this time, the medical team has worked tirelessly, providing daily care to ensure the baby's complete development. Currently, no complications have been recorded in the baby's development," said Dr. Thanh.

According to doctors, there are many causes of premature birth, such as high blood pressure in the mother, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, infectious diseases, and chorioamnionitis.

In addition, pregnant women who are directly or indirectly exposed to tobacco and addictive substances; have inappropriate eating and resting habits during pregnancy; are not of legal marriage age; or do not have regular prenatal checkups may also be at risk.

Doctors advise that during pregnancy, expectant mothers should absolutely avoid factors that can lead to premature birth, and should have regular prenatal checkups to monitor and detect early cases of premature birth or threatened premature birth so that measures can be taken to prolong the pregnancy.
