Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has declared five days of national mourning, beginning on May 21. Ceremonies were held in Tabriz, the capital of East Azerbaijan province, and in Qom, a holy city for Shiite Muslims, according to AFP. The remains of the late president and officials have been brought back to Tehran.
On May 22nd, Supreme Leader Khamenei presided over the funeral in Tehran. A large crowd gathered around Tehran University, where Khamenei led the prayer service. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah deputy leader Naiim Qassem also attended.
Large banners were hung throughout the city, praising the sacrifice of the late president. From the university, the coffin was carried through Enghelab Square in the city center to Azadi Square. The late President Ebrahim Raisi will be laid to rest in his hometown of Mashhad, a city in northeastern Iran. The funeral will take place on May 23rd.
