Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, Head of Weather Forecasting Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that this year's cold air is likely to come earlier than every year. From the end of September to the beginning of October, there will be weak cold air waves affecting the Northern region.
From the end of October to February next year, cold air appears more frequently. In particular, December 2025, January and February 2026 are the strongest impact periods, there may appear strong cold air waves causing severe cold in the Northern region.
In particular, in the period of February-March 2026, light rain and drizzle are likely to occur more often than in previous years, due to the ENSO phenomenon (this is an irregular cyclical change in wind and sea surface temperature in the tropical East Pacific , affecting the climate in most tropical and subtropical regions).
According to the assessment, from the end of 2025 to the beginning of 2026, ENSO is inclined towards a weak La Nina phase. In fact, in years with a weak La Nina, winter often comes earlier. However, during the main winter period, the temperature in the Northern region is not lower than the annual average, so the Northeast monsoon this year will be similar to previous years.
