The FBI emphasized that it would investigate the incident as an assassination attempt, but was also considering it an act of domestic terrorism. The agency stated that the gun used to shoot Mr. Trump was legally purchased and was a Model 556 AR rifle.
In addition, the FBI stated that so far, they have not found any evidence linking Thomas Matthew Crooks, the suspect in the shooting of Mr. Trump, to any history of mental illness, but affirmed that they will review his social media accounts, the weapon used in the incident, and related DNA evidence.
The FBI stated that finding the motive behind the shooting of Mr. Trump is one of its top priorities, while also warning that threats of violence online have increased, particularly after the incident.
According to Reuters, Donald Trump arrived in Milwaukee for a scheduled campaign event. Trump wrote on Truth Social: "I was planning to postpone my trip to Wisconsin and the Republican National Convention by two days, but decided I couldn't let a shooter or a potential assassin force me to change my schedule or anything else. Therefore, I will go to Milwaukee as scheduled."
