Former center-back Rio Ferdinand believes he would be worth $216 million if calculated according to the current transfer market.
"In 2002, Man Utd spent $38 million to sign me. Due to inflation, my value would be $127 million today. But $127 million is still cheap, man. Seriously, I should be worth $216 million in the current market, and I would be earning $508,000 a week. If I were still playing, that would be my value," Ferdinand replied on the YouTube channel Five when asked to estimate his own value.

Ferdinand broke the record for the most expensive defender in history twice. The first time was in 2000, when he became England's record signing, moving from West Ham to Leeds for $23 million. A year later, Juventus broke this record by spending $29 million to buy Lilian Thuram from Parma.
However, Ferdinand regained his status in 2002 when he moved to Man Utd for $38 million. This record stood for 10 years before PSG bought Thiago Silva from Milan for $45 million. Since then, clubs have spent more money on defenders.
The current record also belongs to a Manchester United player, when they spent $97 million to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester in the summer of 2019. Ferdinand believes he will break this record if he continues to play. However, Manchester City could break the record this summer if they buy Croatian center-back Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig.
At Old Trafford, Ferdinand became a legend, winning the Premier League six times, two League Cups, and the 2007-2008 Champions League. In 2014, the 44-year-old former center-back left Man Utd after 312 appearances. He played one more season for Queens Park Rangers before retiring in 2015. Ferdinand regularly comments on football and recently launched his own podcast.
The current world record for football transfers is Neymar's move from Barcelona to PSG in the summer of 2017. At that time, the French club spent a total of $263 million to break the Brazilian striker's contract with the Camp Nou team.
