SEA Games 33, December 10th: Vietnamese swimmers reach finals in 5 events.

Vietnamese swimmers competed with 8 athletes in 5 events, including: Nguyen Quang Thuan - younger brother of "little mermaid" Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, Tran Hung Nguyen (men's 200m individual medley); Cao Van Dung and Trinh Truong Vinh (men's 100m backstroke); Jeremie Loic and Nguyen Van Quoc (men's 100m freestyle); Vo Thi My Tien (women's 200m butterfly) and Nguyen Thuy Hien (women's 50m breaststroke).

In the men's 200m medley qualifying round, Tran Hung Nguyen and Nguyen Quang Thuan competed in the second round, competing with opponents from Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

Indonesian swimmer Subagyo won this heat but Tran Hung Nguyen and Quang Thuan both qualified for the final. Nguyen's time was 2 minutes 07 seconds 82 and Thuan's was 2 minutes 08 seconds 21.

Vo Thi My Tien qualified for the women's 200m butterfly with a time of 2 minutes 16 seconds 24. Her results ranked third among all athletes competing in the qualifying round of this event.

In the men's 100m freestyle, the two Vietnamese representatives, Tran Van Nguyen Quoc and Luong Jeremie Loic Nino, both qualified. Nguyen Quoc's time was 50.85 seconds and Loic Nino's time was 50.63 seconds, placing third and fourth respectively in the qualifying round.

Nguyen Thuy Hien competed in the qualifying round of the women's 50m breaststroke, achieving a time of 32.15 seconds, placing fourth and qualifying for the final. Meanwhile, in the men's 100m backstroke, Cao Van Dung also qualified for the final with 8th place.

Thus, all 5 events with 7/8 Vietnamese athletes won tickets to the final round taking place this afternoon at 6:00 p.m. Among the athletes competing in the morning, only Trinh Truong Vinh did not win a ticket to the final.

Although the Vietnamese athletes' stats are not really good (many athletes are saving their energy for the final round), this is only the qualifying round, the athletes will only really give their all in the final rounds.

Notably, in the men's 200m individual medley, Nguyen Quang Thuan and Tran Hung Nguyen are expected to compete for the gold medal.

Hung Nguyen is of course the more highly rated name as he is the owner of 3 gold medals in the men's 200m individual medley at 3 consecutive SEA Games (30, 31, 32).

The Army swimmer is expected to have an explosive performance this afternoon to win the SEA Games championship for the fourth consecutive time in this event.
