Nearly 10 years ago, when they were still farmers in the Coc San highlands, Ms. Phung Thi May’s family soon realized the potential of the market for environmentally friendly construction materials. While many people were still hesitant about the new, Ms. May proactively sought information and traveled to other provinces to learn about the unburnt brick production model - a green material that is considered a trend of the future.

After the research process, she decided to borrow capital to invest in building a non-fired brick factory right on her hometown. For her, this is not only a step towards economic development but also a way to contribute to protecting the living environment of the community.
“After learning carefully about unburnt bricks and seeing that the product is environmentally friendly, my family started producing them in 2010. Now they are stable and have enough to cover our living expenses,” said Ms. Phung Thi May.
Currently, Ms. May's factory regularly brings to the market about 150,000 bricks per month, with a selling price of about 1,500 VND/brick, equivalent to a revenue of 300 million VND/month. Not only does it bring a stable income to the family, the model also creates jobs for nearly 10 local workers, mainly ethnic minority women.
Ms. Chao Lo May in Tong Sanh commune (Bat Xat) - a worker at the factory said: "If I work enough hours, I can earn about 300,000 VND per day. The work is not too hard, and I get to work near my home, so I feel very secure."
Ms. May's family's unburnt bricks are produced using the principle of two-way static hydraulic pressing, which does not cause vibration and does not emit toxic gases into the environment. The bricks are durable, uniform in size, save mortar and are favored by the market thanks to their stable quality and affordable price. This model has contributed to changing the awareness of many households in the area - from simple farming to sustainable economic activities, responsible for the environment.
Not only recognizing this as a bright spot in rural economic development, the Coc San commune government also proactively created conditions for the model to be replicated in the area.
Mr. Hoang Ngoc Duong, Chairman of Coc San Commune People's Committee affirmed: "The local government will create favorable conditions in terms of policies and mechanisms, especially loans, so that households have more motivation and funding to expand unburnt brick factories."
The success of the production model of Ms. Phung Thi May's family is a testament to the innovative thinking and daring to do in economic development. The model not only helps reduce the pressure of labor migration but also contributes to protecting the green - clean - beautiful living environment in the locality...
