Stable prices; African swine fever spreads, farmers seek temporary solutions

According to records, the price of live pigs today is stable in all three regions. Currently, the whole country is trading in the range of 58,000-64,000 VND/kg. African swine fever is spreading, farmers are looking for a solution to sell pigs before they are old enough.

*Pig price in the North:

In this morning's session, the Northern live pig market recorded no fluctuations, keeping the price from 62,000 - 64,000 VND/kg.

Currently, many provinces and cities in this region are trading live pigs at the highest price in the country, reaching 64,000 VND/kg. The lowest price in the region is 62,000 VND/kg, purchased by traders in the two provinces of Ninh Binh and Lao Cai .

*Pig price in the Central Highlands region

Pig prices in the Central Highlands provinces are stable at around 58,000 - 63,000 VND/kg.

Khanh Hoa, Dak Lak , Quang Nam and Binh Dinh provinces are still the localities with purchasing prices below 60,000 VND/kg, the lowest in the country. Other provinces in the region fluctuate from 60,000 - 63,000 VND/kg.

*Pig price in the Southern region

After a few days of slight fluctuations, live hog prices in the Southern region today remained stable following the general trend.

Specifically, apart from Dong Thap province and Can Tho city , where the price of live pigs reached 62,000 VND/kg, the price in the remaining localities in the region did not have a big difference, fluctuating from 60,000 - 61,000 VND/kg.

According to Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan, Vice President of Dong Nai Livestock Association, small pigs have reappeared due to the complicated situation of African swine fever. Therefore, the total pig herd not only in Dong Nai but also in other localities with livestock farming has decreased.

Notably, when the northern provinces were affected by the storm, pig farmers predicted that the price of live pigs would increase to 70,000 VND/kg, but in reality it was below 60,000 VND/kg. The reason is that farms in areas not affected by storms and floods but facing serious epidemics have pushed under-aged pigs to the market.

Because African swine fever is spreading, farmers are forced to sell pigs at low prices, even accepting losses to avoid the risk of losing everything. The price of live pigs gradually decreases according to weight. Pigs reaching ideal weight (95kg - 1.3 quintals) cost 60,000 VND/kg, pigs under 90kg cost 45,000 VND/kg, pigs under 70kg cost 30,000 VND/kg.

In particular, under-aged pigs under 50kg are only 17,000 VND/kg. Currently, there is no effective vaccine to prevent the disease, so this is a temporary solution for farmers to minimize losses caused by the epidemic.
