Since the announcement of the draft amendments to Decree 24 on gold market management, the domestic gold market has fluctuated relatively slowly. This has narrowed the price difference between SJC gold bars and world gold to 14.6 million VND/ounce instead of over 15 million VND/ounce previously; gold rings are higher, ranging from 10.7 to 12 million VND/ounce.
World gold prices fell by $6 per ounce to $3,341. During the US trading session (night of July 16th), world gold prices surged from $3,322 per ounce to $3,371 before quickly plummeting to $3,340. The price spiked after news that President Trump was about to fire Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. However, the precious metal subsequently fell sharply when Trump stated he had no immediate intention of firing Powell.
Speculation about the Fed is taking place against a backdrop of mixed economic data, keeping inflation concerns a top priority for market participants. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Producer Price Index (PPI) was unchanged in June, falling short of the consensus estimate of a 0.2% monthly increase. Similarly, the core PPI, which excludes volatile items, was also unchanged, again failing to meet expectations.
