World gold prices rose sharply after the US employment report was weaker than expected, strengthening the possibility of the Federal Reserve (Fed) cutting interest rates this month. Currently, the betting rate of the Fed cutting interest rates by 0.25% at the meeting from September 16 to 17 is up to 98%.
The report also weighed on the dollar, with the index falling nearly 0.4% at one point. President Trump’s tariff plans are also facing obstacles after an appeals court ruled last week that most of them were inconsistent with the president’s powers under the US Constitution.
Mr. Trump plans to ask the Supreme Court to rule that his tariffs are constitutional.
Currently, many organizations still predict that the world gold price still has room to increase with a short-to-medium term target of about 3,600 - 3,800 USD/ounce, and even the 4,000 USD/ounce mark could be set before the end of the first quarter of 2026.
The world's largest gold ETF, SPDR Gold Trust, sold a net 6.3 tonnes of gold on Wednesday, reducing its holdings to 984.3 tonnes. The fund had previously bought a net 13 tonnes of gold on Tuesday and collected about 21 tonnes of gold last week.
In a new development, the World Gold Council (WGC) is proposing the launch of digital gold, which could revolutionize London's $900 billion physical gold market with a new way to trade, settle and collateralize bullion.
Digital gold will allow banks and investors to buy and sell physical gold, held in segregated accounts. The London Gold Market will begin testing this new form of gold from Q1-2026.
