On the morning of May 14th, oil prices continued their upward trend, with Brent crude rising $1.67, or 2.57%, to $66.63 per barrel; while WTI crude also increased $1.72, or 2.78%, to $63.67 per barrel.
According to Reuters, after the US and China agreed to significantly reduce import tariffs on goods for at least 90 days, the prices of the two world benchmark oil commodities have maintained a continuous upward trend. In addition, newly released US inflation data for April, which was lower than expected, is also supporting the rise in oil prices.
Gasoline prices may rise slightly again tomorrow.
According to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.2% in April, 0.1% lower than economists ' forecasts. Notably, over the past year, the CPI has only increased 2.3%, the smallest annual increase in four years, leading financial institutions to lower their forecasts for a U.S. recession in the coming months.
However, the upward trend in oil prices is being restrained by abundant oil supply. In May and June, OPEC+ planned to increase oil production more than expected. In addition, the US-China trade conflict has eased, creating an opportunity for China, the world's largest oil importer, to maintain its purchasing momentum. Saudi Arabia is currently the second largest oil supplier to China, after Russia.
Domestically, the Vietnam Petroleum Institute forecasts that gasoline and diesel prices may increase by approximately 0.2 - 2.1% in tomorrow's price adjustment (May 15th). On the morning of May 14th, several major gasoline and diesel distributors in the South predicted an increase of around 200 - 400 VND/liter/kg in this price adjustment. This forecast does not include the Gasoline Price Stabilization Fund and other fees, if any changes occur.
