The profession of "elite nanny"

Wealthy Chinese families are now increasingly hiring highly educated nannies to raise their young children. The requirements include that these nannies must be graduates from the most prestigious universities in China, such as Peking University or Tsinghua University, or have studied abroad at universities like Harvard or Cambridge.

According to Phoenix News (China), the salary for "top-tier nannies" ranges from 10,000 to 30,000 yuan per month (equivalent to 35 to 105 million VND per month).

These "top-notch nannies" will take care of the children's physical and mental health and daily needs. They also tutor and help the children with their studies.

Currently, wealthy Chinese families have a high demand for highly educated nannies. This demand has been recognized and met by employment agencies.

A doctoral student in psychology said she had experience interviewing hundreds of applicants who contacted a recruitment agency to apply for "high-end nanny" positions.

These candidates are all graduates from prestigious universities in China, some even having studied abroad. They hold master's and doctoral degrees, are fluent in multiple languages, are athletic , and possess knowledge of child psychology.

Unlike typical tutors or babysitters, "premium nannies" are deeply involved in a child's daily life, understanding their emotions and needs.

Their responsibilities are diverse, requiring them to be able to interact with young children, because essentially, they are like... a second parent to the child. When a child is sick, they may be asked to take the child to the doctor. They also double as tutors, helping the child with their studies. They even play sports with the child, go on trips , and so on.

These responsibilities would normally belong to the child's biological parents, but because they are too busy, the "top-tier nanny" takes over. The working hours of the "top-tier nanny" are also very flexible, based on an agreement with the child's family.

Some people are hired on an hourly basis, while others are asked to move in with the family to be there regularly to care for the children.

Can parents be replaced?

Song Siyu is a "top-notch nanny" working for a family living in Chongqing. She works from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM on weekdays. Siyu's duties include teaching the children their lessons and playing sports, including soccer, fencing, and swimming.

According to China Central Television (CCTV), millionaire families with assets of 10 million yuan or more are the group in need of hiring "high-end nannies."

While many families in China rely on grandparents or hire nannies to look after their young children, wealthy families in the country are increasingly opting to hire highly educated nannies to support their children's holistic development.

A "top-tier nanny" named Shura stated that in this profession, women have an advantage over men because they possess more comprehensive childcare skills. Families who hire male nannies often want their children to develop athletic skills.

Susu, a "top-tier nanny" with in-depth knowledge of nutrition, said she was tasked by her employer with creating daily meal plans for the children, which the housekeeper would then prepare.

Susu was also asked to stay with the mischievous student throughout the summer vacation. The boy's parents were very strict but didn't have time to discipline their stubborn son.

Susu appeared to teach the boy and play with him. She rode bikes, jogged, and played basketball with him... In particular, she spent time talking to him to understand him, win his affection, and gradually guide him to become more well-behaved and obedient.

Susu noticed that some children were closer to their nannies than to their biological parents. This made her both happy and worried, because she knew she had done her part well, but she was also concerned about the child's relationship with their biological parents.

Educational psychologist Pan Lan stated: "Even 'top-notch nannies' can never replace the role of biological parents. The lack of effective parental guidance remains a major shortcoming in a child's development, and it will leave long-lasting consequences."

For a child to develop fully both physically and mentally, they need the love, care, and attention of their biological parents. Only education and culture within the family can bring meaningful values to both parents and children."

Currently, public opinion in China is divided on the profession of "high-end nanny." Many people have an unfavorable view, believing that hiring a "high-end nanny" is a new way for the wealthy to show off.

However, many people have a more empathetic perspective. "If I could afford it, even if I wasn't too busy with work, I would hire a 'top-tier nanny.' They are all highly educated people, and not all parents have a good education or the pedagogical methods to help their children learn," one parent shared.
