Google has just announced a $1 billion investment to expand artificial intelligence (AI) training at universities, colleges and nonprofits across the United States.
This commitment will be implemented over the next 3 years, with the expectation of contributing to equipping AI knowledge and skills for millions of American students, in the context of artificial intelligence gradually becoming the core foundation in many fields of technology and life.

This is part of Google's “AI Opportunity” initiative, designed to provide training, tools and resources to both students and faculty, and promote access to next-generation AI technology.
In the first phase, more than 100 higher education institutions nationwide have signed up to participate, including the Texas A&M University system and the University of North Carolina. Any accredited school in the United States can apply for support in subsequent phases.
According to information from Google, the support package for schools will include cloud credits, in-depth AI training courses, and access to advanced AI tools such as Gemini, NotebookLM, Deep Research, Veo 3... These are platforms that Google is strongly developing in the field of generative AI, and will be included in the curriculum and research activities of participating schools.
Notably, students aged 18 and above can sign up for a free 12-month subscription to the “Google AI Pro” package, which not only provides access to the most advanced chatbots and language models available, but also 2 terabytes of data storage, providing students with an ideal learning and practice environment. Google emphasizes that the program is designed to “help students directly access AI technology, rather than just learning theory.”
The company also introduced a new program called “AI for Education Accelerator” – an initiative to partner with universities to provide AI-related career certificates, completely free of charge. The certificate will cover sought-after skills such as machine learning, natural language processing, and using AI tools in real-world work. The program is expected to expand to international training facilities soon after its successful implementation in the US.
Speaking about the initiative, Lisa Gevelber, Google’s director of education relations, said: “AI training is not only an opportunity for personal growth but also a lever to advance the global digital economy . We believe that every student, regardless of background or financial situation, deserves access to leading technology.”
Google’s move is considered a long-term strategy to enhance brand recognition in the field of AI education, while helping to form a new generation of workers capable of applying AI technology to solve practical problems. In the context of the global labor market witnessing a strong shift under the impact of automation and AI, equipping students with technological knowledge from the classroom is considered a decisive direction.
On the university side, many leaders said that Google’s support program brings practical value, especially for public schools or small schools where technology research budgets are limited. Being able to use modern AI tools at no cost is a great opportunity to innovate curricula and enable students to practice according to industry standards.
Meanwhile, some education experts warn that schools need to carefully evaluate to ensure that integrating AI technology into teaching does not overshadow the role of critical thinking, professional ethics and humanity – factors that are fundamental in higher education.
However, with an investment scale of up to 1 billion USD and strong technical support from a leading technology corporation in the world , Google's AI training program is opening a new turning point for American higher education - where artificial intelligence is no longer a science fiction theory, but becomes a tool for learning, creativity and career development in reality.
