Localities throughout Ha Tinh province are "actively" implementing the second phase of vaccination for livestock and poultry in 2023, striving to complete it before October 30th to ensure effective disease prevention and control.

As one of the first localities in the province to implement the second phase of vaccination for livestock and poultry, Cam Quan commune (Cam Xuyen district) has mobilized veterinary staff to go directly to each livestock farming household to carry out the vaccination work. After 3 days of campaigning, the entire commune has vaccinated more than 800 doses of vaccine for buffaloes, cows, and pigs (reaching a rate of over 80% of the total herd).

Veterinary officers from Cam Quan commune (Cam Xuyen district) visited each livestock farming household to carry out vaccination work for livestock.

Ms. Phan Thi Chinh, a veterinary officer in Cam Quan commune, said: “Vaccination of livestock and poultry at this time is extremely important because the animals' immunity has expired. The weather during the transition between seasons is unpredictable, making it easy for dangerous diseases such as lumpy skin disease in buffaloes and cattle, foot-and-mouth disease, and avian influenza to break out... Thanks to effective public awareness campaigns and the mobilization of the entire political system, this vaccination campaign has achieved the set target with a high vaccination rate.”

Besides Cam Quan commune, other localities throughout Cam Xuyen district are also focusing intensely on livestock and poultry vaccination. To date, Cam Xuyen district has been allocated 3,500 doses of bovine hemorrhagic septicemia vaccine; 4,000 doses of foot-and-mouth disease vaccine; 20,000 doses of avian influenza vaccine; 2,500 doses of swine hemorrhagic septicemia vaccine; and 2,500 doses of African swine fever vaccine. Cam Xuyen aims to complete the second phase of livestock and poultry vaccination by October 6, 2023.

Lam Trung Thuy commune (Duc Tho district) is striving to complete the second round of livestock and poultry vaccination by September 24th.

Duc Tho district has also received preventive medicine for livestock and poultry in this second phase. Based on the total herd size surveyed at the grassroots level, Duc Tho was allocated 3,075 doses of bovine hemorrhagic septicemia vaccine, 2,725 doses of foot-and-mouth disease vaccine, 10,000 doses of avian influenza vaccine, 1,325 doses of swine hemorrhagic septicemia vaccine, and 1,325 doses of African swine fever vaccine by the specialized agency.

Mr. Phan Dang Duc, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Lam Trung Thuy commune (Duc Tho district), said: “In recent times, the locality has intensified propaganda to livestock farmers to strictly implement disease prevention and control measures for their livestock. Currently, the commune is mobilizing manpower to carry out centralized vaccination and vaccination at individual livestock households according to regulations. This time, the entire commune will vaccinate 582 buffaloes and cows against hemorrhagic septicemia and foot-and-mouth disease; 300 pigs against hemorrhagic septicemia and swine cholera; and over 500 chickens against avian influenza across 15 villages. The locality strives to complete the assigned target by September 24th.”

This is the transitional season, so we need to speed up the vaccination schedule for our livestock.

According to information from the Department of Animal Health, since the beginning of 2023, dangerous infectious diseases such as avian influenza, African swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease, and anthrax have occurred nationwide. The risk of dangerous animal diseases continuing to spread widely is very high. Furthermore, the current transitional period between seasons, with sudden weather changes, reduces the resistance of livestock and poultry, creating favorable conditions for pathogens to develop and spread. Therefore, accelerating the vaccination schedule is a solution to increase the resistance of livestock.

Mr. Nguyen Hoai Nam, Deputy Head of the Veterinary Management Department (Ha Tinh Livestock and Veterinary Sub-Department), said: “The second vaccination campaign will run from September 1st to October 30th. Currently, Cam Xuyen and Duc Tho districts have received sufficient vaccines and are focusing on vaccinating livestock and poultry according to the instructions of the specialized agency. The remaining localities are completing the review and statistical compilation of the total herd size for small-scale household and farm livestock; reviewing vaccination for those not vaccinated in the first campaign and the quantity of new vaccines needed in the second campaign. Based on that, the specialized agency will allocate vaccines to localities to ensure livestock and poultry vaccination according to plan and achieve the highest effectiveness.”

To ensure the timely implementation of the second phase of livestock and poultry vaccination in 2023, achieving planned targets and contributing to proactive disease prevention, the Ha Tinh Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine directed its specialized departments to closely monitor the vaccination progress, urge localities to take advantage of the time and accelerate the process; and assign specialized staff to directly supervise and monitor the organization and implementation at the commune and village levels.

Therefore, it is necessary to promptly provide guidance and supplementary information related to professional expertise, techniques, and vaccination procedures; closely monitor the disease situation in localities to make adjustments and ensure that vaccination work complies with regulations.
