At the session on the afternoon of May 10, the Russian House of Representatives voted to approve Mr. Mishustin as Russian Prime Minister with 375 votes in favor, 57 abstentions and no votes against, according to RIA Novosti.

The move came just hours after President Putin nominated Mikhail Mishustin to continue as prime minister in the new cabinet, a move widely expected to retain one of the country's most talented technocrats.

Prime Minister Mishustin and other politicians in the Russian Cabinet are credited with effectively steering the country's economic "ship" despite heavy Western sanctions over the conflict in Ukraine.

Most other Cabinet members are expected to retain their posts. The ministers of defense, foreign affairs, interior, justice, emergencies and the head of the Federal Security Service (FSB) are appointed by President Putin after consultation with the Senate.

According to the Russian Constitution, Prime Minister Mishustin and the old cabinet resigned on May 7 after Mr. Putin took office for a fifth term as President of Russia.

Mr Mishustin, 58, was first appointed prime minister in January 2020, replacing his predecessor Dmitry Medvedev. Mr Mishustin has a doctorate in economics and worked in the IT industry in the 1990s. In 2008, he ran the UFG investment group and was appointed head of the Federal Tax Service in 2010.

According to Interfax, Mr. Mishustin is the 14th Prime Minister of Russia since 1991 and the 4th Prime Minister to be re-elected for a second term.

During a meeting with President Putin on May 10, Prime Minister Mishustin assured that "there will be no interruptions in the work of the government" and pledged to "ensure continuity for all national goals".

Prime Minister Mishustin emphasized: "We will do everything to develop the country's economy, to be worthy of the people's trust."
