TPO – According to historical records, the two Forest Well trees located in the center of Quang Yen town, Quang Ninh province, are over 700 years old and are the remaining evidence of a forest that was cut down by the army and people of the Tran dynasty to make stakes for the Battle of Bach Dang in the naval battle that defeated the invading Mongol army in 1288.
The two ironwood trees of Gieng Rung are located at the foot of Tien Son mountain, in Zone 5, Quang Yen ward, Quang Yen town, Quang Ninh province. |
According to many elderly people in the area, the two 700-year-old ironwood trees are remnants of the vast ironwood forests of the past, stretching from Chi Linh City ( Hai Duong province) through Dong Trieu to Quang Yen in Quang Ninh province, including 54 ancient ironwood trees at Den Cao - Hai Duong. |
The two ironwood trees are approximately 30 meters tall, with a trunk circumference of 5.5-7.2 meters and a main trunk height of about 6 meters. |
The trees are lush and green, their canopies extending 20-25 meters, providing shade for an entire neighborhood. These two ironwood trees are a testament to the glorious history of the Tran Dynasty's army and people on the Bach Dang River. |
Legend has it that in 1288, during the resistance against the Mongol invaders, Tran Hung Dao and other generals of the Tran dynasty cut down large ironwood trees in the ironwood forests from Hai Duong to Quang Ninh. These trees, with an average length of 2m-2.8m and some reaching 3.2m, had a diameter of 20-25cm. They sharpened the ends, reinforced them with iron, and then planted them in the Bach Dang River to defeat the powerful army from the North. |
These two ironwood trees are the last remaining evidence of the ancient ironwood forest. Located about 2 km from the Yen Giang stake field, Bach Dang, and the Bach Dang Giang National Special Historical Site, these two ironwood trees are a testament to the heroic spirit of the Dong A era, representing the unity of the entire Dai Viet nation. |
Next to the two ancient ironwood trees are two wells built during the French colonial era, closely associated with the daily lives of the local people. Currently, the wells are surrounded by walls, paved with clean bricks, and have covers. "The water in the two wells is sweet and clean; in the past, it served the entire residential area. But now that every house has tap water, fewer people still use the well water. The two ironwood trees thrive thanks to the water from the wells for irrigation," said a nearby resident. |
The two ancient ironwood trees at Rung Well were recognized as national relics by the Ministry of Culture in 1998 and belong to the Bach Dang Victory historical relic complex. Given the exceptional historical, cultural, and scientific values of the site, on September 27, 2012, the Prime Minister decided to classify the Bach Dang Victory historical relic complex of 1288 as a special national relic. |
| Despite enduring the vicissitudes of nature and numerous devastating wars, the two ironwood trees of Gieng Rung still stand tall and strong. |
In 2008 and 2011, two ironwood trees showed signs of leaf drying due to record-breaking cold spells. Quang Yen town invited experts to save the trees by pruning the dry branches, applying growth-promoting chemicals, and supplementing nutrients. Afterwards, the two ironwood trees miraculously recovered, with lush branches and leaves growing back. |
In 2024, to commemorate the 93rd anniversary of the founding of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and to welcome the Congress of the Vietnam Youth Union, the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of Quang Yen town, in coordination with the Management Board of the Bach Dang National Special Historical Relic, organized the renovation of the area surrounding the two ancient lim trees and installed QR code signs to introduce the national historical relic of the two ancient lim trees at Gieng Rung to the people and tourists. |
Along with the Quang Yen town People's Committee renovating the surrounding area into a green park, thanks to the shade of the trees, this place has become a community gathering spot, a playground for children, and a place for the elderly to exercise every afternoon. |
Visiting the Bach Dang stake field and other relics associated with the Bach Dang victory, such as the Tran Hung Dao Temple, the Queen Mother's Shrine, the Yen Giang stake field, and the two ancient ironwood trees, tourists will find the historical story from over 700 years ago closer to reality, and the presence of the people of the past seems to still linger. |
