
This is a rare achievement, not only affirming the talent of Tran Minh Hoang but also the pride of the education sector of Ha Tinh in particular and Vietnam in general.
Passion and the journey to conquer the peak
Tran Minh Hoang was born and raised in Tien Dien commune, Ha Tinh province, in a family with two brothers. From a young age, Tran Minh Hoang showed a special passion for Mathematics. Starting from small math problems, the boy gradually discovered and conquered the complex world of logic and numbers. In particular, growing up in a family with a father who was a Physics teacher and a mother who was a Math teacher, the passion of the two brothers Minh Hoang was nurtured every day by their parents. Hoang's older brother, Tran Minh An, also won second prize in the National Physics Competition for Excellent Students, when he was a 12th grade student at Ha Tinh Specialized High School.
Minh Hoang's mother, Tran Thi Thu Hoa, said: Minh Hoang showed his talent for mathematics very early, however, his success is also the result of a process of constant effort.
For Tran Minh Hoang, mathematics is not just dry numbers, but a world full of colors and challenges. He always finds joy in solving difficult problems, considering it a driving force for continuous progress. Hoang's journey to conquer the top was marked by impressive achievements right from when he was studying at Nguyen Trai Secondary School (former Nghi Xuan district). In grade 8, he took the Math exam at the Provincial Excellent Student Competition and excellently won the top position. In grade 9, he continued to top the Provincial Excellent Student Competition in this subject. During his time in secondary school, Minh Hoang won many national and international Math medals.
At the entrance exam to Ha Tinh High School for the Gifted, Minh Hoang excelled in scoring 9.75 points in Math. With this score, he and two other students became the valedictorians with the highest entrance scores.
At the National Excellent Student Exam for the 2022-2023 school year, although Minh Hoang is a 10th grade student taking the exam at a higher level, he still achieved 32 points, ranked first nationwide, and entered the International Olympic Team.
Twice the Glory

At the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in the UK, Tran Minh Hoang, then a grade 11 student of Math 1 at Ha Tinh High School for the Gifted, won a Silver Medal. Just one year later, at the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad held in Australia from July 10 to 20, the young man continued to bring glory to his homeland and country, once again achieving success with a Gold Medal.
The 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad has the participation of contestants from nearly 100 countries and territories. The Vietnamese team consists of 6 excellent students from specialized high schools across the country. Each contestant does 6 math problems in 2 days, each problem is worth a maximum of 7 points, the maximum total score is 42. In this exam, Tran Minh Hoang excellently won the Gold Medal with a score of 35.
Minh Hoang shared that, in addition to his own efforts, he is grateful for the attention of the leaders of Ha Tinh province, the provincial Department of Education and Training, the school, teachers, friends and family members. The spiritual and material attention over the past time has helped him overcome difficulties to achieve the results he has today.
Tran Minh Hoang's achievement once again affirms the quality of education in Ha Tinh province; it is also the fourth consecutive year that students of Ha Tinh High School for the Gifted have won medals at international competitions.
Vice Chairman of Ha Tinh Provincial People's Committee, Mr. Duong Tat Thang, emphasized that Minh Hoang's achievements demonstrate the efforts of students, teachers and the school; are the honor and pride of the Party Committee, government and people of Ha Tinh, further illuminating the tradition of studiousness of the homeland, arousing the motivation for each student in the province to excel in their studies.
