According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the country's navy is receiving more and more ships, with 40 ships expected to enter service this year, compared with 33 ships last year and 24 ships in 2022.

The leader said that one of Russia's goals is to comprehensively upgrade the navy, including ships, aircraft and coastal equipment, as well as the infrastructure of bases, to strengthen its positions in strategically important world seas and significantly improve its combat potential.

In addition, he said that "repair and refurbishment of equipment" of the Russian Navy is being carried out extensively.

Speaking at a meeting in Moscow on shipbuilding, he said the cost of building naval ships in the future would be significantly lower.

"When developing new ship designs, we must carry out in advance the development and design of equipment, tools, hardware components and weapons systems, within the framework of integrated inter-agency target programs. This will significantly reduce the time for designing and building major ships. I think this will also result in much lower costs," TASS quoted him as saying.

In another development, US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns said that Russia has boosted its defense industry since sending troops to Ukraine and that its defense-industrial base is now very strong.

The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) previously concluded that Western sanctions against Russia are not having a strong enough impact on the country's defense industry.
