According to AP, the Moroccan state news agency (MAP) reported that two four-story buildings collapsed in the city of Fez on the evening of December 10th. The two houses were reportedly home to eight families. The collapse killed at least 22 people and injured 16 others, who were taken to hospital.
Authorities added that the area has been evacuated and search and rescue operations are underway. The number of missing people is currently unknown.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The cause of the collapse is still being determined. The building was constructed in 2006, according to MAP.
Fez is Morocco's third-largest city, known for its walled old town and medieval markets. It is also one of the country's poorest urban centers, where infrastructure is dilapidated.

Building collapses are not uncommon in Moroccan cities, which are experiencing rapid population growth. According to the Moroccan news agency Le360 , a building collapse in Fez in May killed 10 people and injured seven others.
According to AP, building regulations are often not fully followed in Morocco, especially in the old town where old, multi-story houses built of cement bricks are common. Although the two buildings that collapsed on December 10 were built according to regulations, Hespresso reported that additional floors had been added to them.
