According to an article in Climate Home News on November 6th, many climate experts warn of the risk of Washington withdrawing from international agreements and commitments on combating climate change after the US election concludes.
Laurence Tubiana, Executive Director of the European Climate Fund, emphasized that the US election results represent a setback for global efforts to reduce climate change, but the Paris Agreement has proven to be more robust and effective than any country's policy.
The current context is very different from when Trump was first elected in 2016. The U.S. once led a strong economic momentum thanks to the global green transition, but Washington risks losing that advantage.
Echoing Laurence Tubiana's sentiment, Bill Hare, CEO of Climate Analytics, warned that the election of someone who denies climate change as President of the United States is extremely dangerous for the world .
He added: "We have witnessed the horrific damage globally caused by human-induced global warming. If Mr. Trump threatens and actually withdraws Washington from the Paris Agreement, the biggest loser will be America itself."
Meanwhile, Yao Zhe, Global Policy Advisor at Greenpeace East Asia, said that China is expected to take a leading position in the fight against climate change. To achieve this, Beijing needs to submit a new climate plan to the United Nations outlining actions to transition away from fossil fuels.
Chinese experts believe that climate cooperation played a crucial role in stabilizing US-China relations under President Joe Biden's term. While the upcoming Trump administration may reverse some of the achievements in climate diplomacy , US-China climate cooperation continues between non-state actors.
