In 2019, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Linh's family in Loc Nham village, Dong Loi commune, accumulated 4 hectares of rice land by leasing it from households in the village who lacked the resources to cultivate commercial rice for businesses.
The 2.3 hectares of ornamental peach trees belonging to Mr. Tran Sy Toan's family in Dong Thanh village, Hop Ly commune (Trieu Son district) were accumulated from land owned by his family and six other households in the village.
After seven years of cultivating rice on contiguous plots, Mr. Linh has observed that large-scale rice production yields significant benefits. He explains that while small, fragmented plots cost 300,000 VND per sao (approximately 1000 square meters) to hire laborers for transplanting, large-scale rice fields reduce the cost to 150,000 VND per sao, halving costs and shortening planting time by two-thirds. Furthermore, large-scale rice cultivation facilitates more concentrated and synchronized mechanization, reducing input costs, labor, and post-harvest losses. Importantly, through consolidation, his family has established partnerships with businesses for product distribution and direct purchase of fresh rice from the fields, contributing to profits of tens of millions of VND per crop from their 4 hectares of cultivated land.
Mr. Linh stated: "Currently, my family is collaborating with An Thanh Phong Agricultural Products Co., Ltd. ( Thanh Hoa City) in product distribution. To supply high-quality rice, my family cultivates fragrant and delicious rice varieties such as TBR225, TBR97, etc., adhering to VietGAP standards."
According to Mr. Linh, the fact that businesses are partnering with him to purchase fresh rice directly from the fields brings significant profits to his family. Besides saving them the need to hire laborers for transportation, drying, and storage, it also provides a stable income and a reliable market for their produce.
In the same commune, Mr. Bui Van Hai's family in Tho Loc village also accumulated 2 hectares of rice land. On this land, his family planted rice varieties with fragrant and delicious rice quality such as TBR225, TBR97... Mr. Hai said: "The entire area of rice after harvest is purchased directly from the field by Sao Khue Trading Joint Stock Company, located in Dong Hoang commune (Dong Son district). With the company's purchase price of 700,000 VND/quintal, and a yield of 60 quintals/hectare/season, after deducting investment costs (seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and labor), it brings the family a profit of more than ten million VND/season."
Currently, in Dong Loi commune, there is one cooperative and nearly 100 households participating in land consolidation and concentration, linking up to guarantee product sales, covering an area of 49 hectares of rice land. These organizations and households have partnered with two businesses, Sao Khue Trading Joint Stock Company and An Thanh Phong Agricultural Products Co., Ltd., in product sales. This has contributed to increasing income by 15-20% compared to conventional production.
While people in Dong Loi commune focus on cultivating rice for commercial purposes and linking with businesses to guarantee product sales, people in Hop Ly commune concentrate their land on growing ornamental peach trees. Currently, this locality has 50 hectares of land dedicated to growing ornamental peach trees, concentrated in the villages of Dong Thanh, Tien Thanh, Quang Thanh, and Noi Son. Compared to rice cultivation, the income from growing ornamental peach trees is 10 times higher. Mr. Tran Sy Toan from Dong Thanh village said: “Rice farming is unstable, so since 2016, my family has been growing peach and kumquat trees. Seeing the high economic efficiency, since 2019, my family has acquired the land use rights of 6 neighboring households to invest in growing peach trees. With more than 2.3 hectares dedicated to growing peach trees, we sell about 1,500 trees each year. After deducting expenses, my family earns 500-600 million VND.”
Implementing Resolution No. 13-NQ/TU, dated January 11, 2019, of the Provincial Party Committee on "Land consolidation and concentration for large-scale, high-tech agricultural development by 2025, with a vision to 2030," Trieu Son district currently has 246 organizations, individuals, and households participating in land consolidation and concentration, utilizing 2,344 hectares of land for large-scale, high-tech agricultural production. Of this, over 2,194 hectares are in crop cultivation; 130 hectares in forestry; and nearly 16 hectares in aquaculture. Mr. Nguyen Le Khuong, Deputy Head of the District's Agriculture and Rural Development Department, assessed: In addition to effectively overcoming the situation of scattered and small-scale farmland, forming concentrated commodity production areas, and contributing to the synchronized mechanization of the production process, land consolidation also attracts businesses to link and invest in agricultural production, contributing to increasing income value per hectare of cultivated land. According to Mr. Khuong, after land consolidation, production value increased by 20-30%. Based on these results, Trieu Son district strives to consolidate an additional 1,380 hectares of agricultural land in the 2021-2025 period for large-scale production and application of high technology.
