The Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities does something surprising to understand new students

(NLDO) - Instead of sending congratulations and encouraging new students to try hard during their four years of study, the leaders of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities took unexpected action.

On the morning of September 25, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU-HCM) held a warm welcome ceremony for new students of the 2025 class at VNU-HCM. The program was attended by leaders of VNU-HCM, member units of VNU-HCM, diplomatic agencies, strategic business partners... and 4,000 new students.

At the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan, Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, said that according to tradition, in the opening ceremony or welcoming new students, the principal will have messages and share with the students. However, the school wants to do something different, which is to understand and meet the expectations of new students better.

"The school conducted a survey with more than 60% of new students to listen to their wishes. It was from those honest responses that I was inspired for today's sharing, a speech filled with a lot of emotions" - Professor, Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan expressed.

Among them, the 3 issues that new students are most concerned about are: Finding out more information about job opportunities, even opportunities to work in the right field or the wrong field; how to not "owe" general subjects and the quality of student life.

Professor Phuong Lan said the good news is that the number of male students has increased compared to previous years. Specifically, this year, about 78% of new students are female, the remaining 22% are male. This shows that the interest of men in the field of social sciences is gradually spreading more widely.

According to the school’s statistics, the number of admitted new students coming from Ho Chi Minh City accounts for about 30%, the 10 high schools with the highest number of admitted students are all in Ho Chi Minh City. In particular, Tay Thanh High School leads with the number of admitted students with 70 students.

The principal talks about the most "tricky" problem

According to Professor Phuong Lan, in the survey, she received many opinions from students. Among them, the most "tricky" issue was job opportunities after graduation.

"Does the profession choose the person or does the person choose the profession? This is related to whether the job is in the right field or not. In my case, the profession chooses the person. In modern society, we must always be ready for both. Whether you have a clear direction in advance or the job comes unexpectedly, you need to prepare yourself with full knowledge and skills, so that we can be proactive in any situation" - Professor Phuong Lan advised.

Over the years, the school has continuously improved its position, proving that social and humanistic knowledge is transformed to serve the community with very practical values. The rate of students having jobs in the first year after graduation is nearly 90%, of which 70%-75% work in the right major.

In the 2025-2026 school year, the school received companionship and support from partners through the scholarship and talent promotion program, sponsorship of facilities and training equipment with a total value of nearly 1.6 billion VND. At the same time, the school awarded 4 scholarships, each worth 100 million VND, to the 4 top valedictorians.
