In an interview before the morning training session on July 3rd, coach Mai Duc Chung shared his thoughts on the Vietnamese women's national team's training progress in preparation for the 2023 World Cup.
Chương Thị Kiều has not yet fully recovered from her injury.
Speaking about the team's preparations ahead of the 2023 World Cup, Mr. Chung affirmed that the team is fully ready.
"Up until now, we've prepared 99% for the World Cup. The Vietnamese women's national team has been well-prepared since their training camp in Europe."
"Now that we're back here, we're just consolidating and improving. As for the mistakes, we're trying to correct them," Coach Mai Duc Chung continued.
In addition, Mr. Chung also revealed the reason why central defender Chuong Thi Kieu was selected to participate in the 2023 World Cup despite not being fully recovered from her injury.
"Chương Thị Kiều is currently not at 90% fitness, but that position is very important to us."
"It's possible that Chuong Thi Kieu can't play the full 90 minutes, but there are times when this player needs to come on to adjust the defense and remind her teammates," said coach Mai Duc Chung.
On July 2nd, coach Mai Duc Chung announced the list of 23 players who will join the Vietnamese women's national team at the 2023 World Cup.
When asked about his selection criteria, Mr. Chung revealed: “I select players just like other coaches. I prioritize a position where there are two players so they can substitute for each other. Or, one player who can play in multiple positions.”
I dropped five players not because they were bad, but because their positions overlapped. Every time the Vietnamese women's national team convenes, some players are sent back. This time was no different.
I prioritize the forward position. Right now, the Vietnamese women's national team only has Huỳnh Như and Hải Yến. If one of these two players gets injured, the coaching staff needs a replacement.
Therefore, I chose Vu Thi Hoa and Thuy Hang. The striker position is very important but also prone to injury. Therefore, we have to make appropriate calculations,” the Vietnam women's national team coach concluded.
According to the plan, on July 5th, the Vietnamese women's national team will depart for New Zealand in preparation for the 2023 World Cup.
In this tournament, Huynh Nhu and her teammates will face the US women's team (July 22), Portugal (July 27), and the Netherlands (August 1) in succession.
