Coach Solskjaer appointed to lead Besiktas

(Dan Tri) - Former Man Utd coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (51 years old) was appointed as the new head coach of Besiktas Club (Türkiye) on January 17, under a contract until 2028.

After 18 rounds in the Turkish championship, Besiktas is ranked 6th on the rankings with 30 points. In the Europa League arena, Besiktas is at risk of being eliminated after the group stage when it is ranked 28th out of 36 teams and struggling to compete for a position to win a play-off ticket.

Therefore, the presence of coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to help Besiktas overcome difficult times.

Besiktas fired coach Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, a former Dutch football star, in December 2024 and appointed Serdar Topraktepe as interim coach. Recently, the Turkish club's board of directors actively searched for a replacement coach and decided to choose coach Solskjaer.

Coach Solskjaer returns to the coaching bench for the first time since being sacked by Man Utd in November 2021. Coach Solskjaer said he turned down coaching offers around the world to go to Turkey to lead Besiktas.

Coach Solskjaer told the media when he was welcomed by Besiktas board members at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul on the evening of January 17: "I'm very happy to be here. I can't wait to start work. It's a pleasure to be in this wonderful city."

Coach Solskjaer did not have time to lead Besiktas to face Samsunspor in the 19th round of the Turkish league today (January 18). He will most likely make his debut in the match between Besiktas and Athletic Bilbao in the 7th round of the Europa League at home ground Tupras Stadyumu on January 22.
