(NADS) - The 2020-2025 term of the Ho Chi Minh City Photography Association can be said to be one of the most distinctive and noteworthy terms in many aspects, including theoretical and critical work.
A brief overview of the activities of LLPB theory
During its term, the Literary Criticism and Theory Committee consisted of three members; however, the number of members actually participating in activities was often insufficient, never enough. In the final year of the term, the Committee was supplemented with additional members, but the quality of its activities remained inconsistent. Nevertheless, despite the shortage, the Committee remained active and regular. In addition to its work in literary criticism and theory for the Association, Committee members also wrote articles for the Central Council for Literary and Artistic Criticism and Theory, the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists, and the Literary and Artistic Theory and Criticism Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Associations of Literature and Arts. The Committee members' articles were frequently used, published in prestigious journals, and presented at scientific conferences at various levels. Committee members were invited by the Central Propaganda Department, the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee's Propaganda Department, the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Associations of Literature and Arts, and several provinces and cities such as Ha Giang , Thai Nguyen, Binh Dinh, and Thua Thien Hue to write papers for scientific conferences from the national to the local level. In the field of literary and artistic criticism, the Literary and Artistic Criticism Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Photography Association is known as a reliable and active source of information, especially for the Central Literary and Artistic Criticism Council.
To explore the themes suitable for critical analysis, the Ho Chi Minh City Photography Association's Literary and Artistic Criticism Committee focused on issues impacting photography nationwide and in the city specifically. From the beginning of the term, a major impact on photography was the Covid-19 pandemic. While the pandemic has passed, it has left behind significant sacrifices and losses, but also enduring love and support among photographers; and a spirit of overcoming all dangers and actively creating historical images of the nation's courageous fight against the pandemic. The city's photography has accomplished things that other art forms would find difficult to do during such a critical and challenging time for the country.
During the five-year term, it can be seen that the following sources of influence have inspired the main themes for photographic criticism and theory:
The impact of science and technology on photography.
Like cinema, photography is based on technological advancements. Changes and advancements in science and technology in this field have a profound and fundamental impact on photography. In the last five years, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, particularly digital technology, has clearly demonstrated this. Specifically, the emergence of modern digital cameras, image processing software, drones, and now artificial intelligence (AI) shows just how much photography is changing as it is influenced and guided by technological equipment. On a macro level, the government is currently investing heavily in technological infrastructure, creating an environment and developing the photography market both domestically and internationally. These influences create changes, both favorable and challenging, impacting the nature of photography while also fostering creativity and building the foundation for its ecosystem and market. The impact of science and technology has "paved the highway" for photography towards a cultural industry. Regarding this topic, the LLPB Committee has had articles published in journals or presented in conference papers, including the following five main articles:
The impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution on the exhibition sector. LLPB VHNT Magazine, November 2020.

During the 2020-2025 term, within the Ho Chi Minh City Photography Association's Literary Criticism and Review Board, photographer Tran Quoc Dung, the head of the Board, wrote 32 articles published in newspapers, magazines, and presented papers at scientific conferences at various levels. Of these, 21 articles were published in the Literary Criticism and Review Journal of the Central Council for Literary and Artistic Theory and Criticism. Notably, Tran Quoc Dung's book on literary criticism and review , "Photography: Impacts, Challenges, and Opportunities," was awarded the C prize by the Central Council for Literary and Artistic Theory and Review in 2024. This is a further honor following the A prize awarded to the author in 2020 for his work "Photographic Culture - A Perspective."
The Ho Chi Minh City Photography Association's Literary and Artistic Criticism Committee, despite its small membership, has worked tirelessly throughout the past term, writing and publishing articles in magazines; writing papers; and participating in presentations at numerous scientific conferences and seminars at various levels. However, within the Ho Chi Minh City Photography Association itself, the Committee's activities have not been truly prominent among the members. Although it has addressed issues facing the Association, overall, the Literary and Artistic Criticism work within the Association has not been in-depth; the Committee's articles have not been regularly published on the Association's website; and the Committee has not organized seminars within the Association, focusing mainly on major issues in photography in society and photography in general nationwide. This is an issue that needs to be addressed in the Association's Literary and Artistic Criticism work in the next term.
