Due to the flash flood situation after super typhoon Yagi, Van Yen town in particular and Yen Bai province in general were isolated in the sea of water, so transferring patients to the provincial hospital was impossible, requiring an intermediate medical facility that met the conditions and capacity to receive emergency patients in a timely manner.

Understanding that situation, as a frontline hospital, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital immediately deployed simultaneous and continuous online exchanges with two medical facilities: Van Yen District Medical Center, Yen Bai and Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital.

At 8:00 a.m. on September 10, 2024, immediately after the patient was transferred to Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital, experts from the three hospitals consulted and exchanged expertise to promptly come up with a surgical plan for the patient via the telemedicine system.

In addition, the Board of Directors of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital directly held an online emergency consultation for 3 patients buried by flash floods in Lang Nu village, Phuc Khanh commune, Bao Yen district, Lao Cai province. Among them was a 7-year-old patient with grade 1 liver rupture, adrenal gland injury, traumatic brain injury, and fracture of the middle third of the left femur.

A male patient residing in Lang Nu village, Phuc Khanh commune, Bao Yen district, Lao Cai province was swept away by a landslide and was taken to Bao Yen hospital for emergency treatment, then transferred to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.

The patient was admitted to the hospital with multiple injuries: traumatic brain injury, chest trauma, closed abdominal trauma, vascular injury, left popliteal vein injury, and complex fracture of the upper third of the two bones of the left tibia.

The online television bridge of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital is always open 24/7 to conduct consultations and provide professional support for emergency cases and seriously ill patients in areas struggling with floods and landslides.

Previously, information from Viet Duc Friendship Hospital said that the facility had received 100 emergency cases, of which 50% were serious, mostly cases of traumatic brain injury, accompanied by injuries to the cervical spine, chest, abdomen, and limbs after the storm.

Specifically, on September 6 and 7, the hospital's on-duty staff received and treated 14 emergency cases hospitalized due to the impact of the super typhoon, including 1 case of a person being crushed by a falling tree causing a traumatic brain injury; 2 cases of limb injuries, traumatic brain injury due to walls and broken glass falling on people, and nearly 10 cases of car and motorbike accidents while participating in traffic while riding home through the storm.

According to Dr. Quach Van Kien, Deputy Head of the Department of Digestive Surgery, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, on Saturday (September 7), most of the emergency cases were from the Hanoi area. By Sunday (September 8), the number of emergency cases increased 5 times, most of which were transferred from provincial hospitals.

At Bach Mai Hospital, from the evening of September 7 to the morning of September 8, the A9 Emergency Center received 10 patients injured by collapsed houses, collapsed roofs, and fallen trees on the street due to the impact of storm No. 3. These patients were all promptly treated after being transferred.

Among the five patients admitted to the hospital in the early morning of September 8, two were seriously injured in the head and neck due to a metal roof falling on them and falling from a height.

Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, said that the hospital has organized human resources and staff to be on duty, in control, and ready to handle incidents such as fallen trees, flooding, and roof damage caused by storms.

The hospital also arranged additional mobile emergency teams with full medicine and equipment, ready to support lower levels when requested. The professional council consisting of leading experts in many fields is also ready to consult remotely, supporting colleagues in provinces affected by storms to provide the most effective emergency care for patients.

A9 Emergency Center, Bach Mai Hospital ensures 24/7 emergency patient service during storm No. 3. At the same time, focus on treating the injured; promptly overcome the consequences at medical facilities, do not interrupt emergency work, treat people, do not let people and patients not receive medical examination, treatment, and medical care. Organize environmental sanitation, prevent epidemics, ensure clean water and food safety.
