In the early days of the dry season, the sun and wind covered the high mountain slopes of Tram Tau commune, Lao Cai province. The natural protective forests and production forests with thick vegetation cover pose a high risk of forest fires. In this situation, the authorities and people of Tram Tau commune have proactively and synchronously deployed many solutions to prevent and fight forest fires, minimizing possible damage.
In Pa Te village, Tram Tau commune - where over 111 hectares of forest are managed and protected, the shock team regularly patrols, especially in locations bordering production areas, which are at risk of being cut down for firewood.

Ms. Vang Thi Da, Pa Te village shared: We regularly patrol so we have prevented and limited the acts of deforestation and slash-and-burn that cause forest fires. Protecting the forest, people also benefit from forest environmental services every year, so everyone is excited.
To do a good job of forest protection and forest fire prevention, every year, Tram Tau commune strengthens the Steering Committee for Sustainable Forestry Development and the shock teams in each village; assigning specific tasks to each member in charge. The commune also develops a plan for on-duty and patrolling to protect forests according to the fire forecast level, especially when the risk is at level IV, level V, the local forest rangers and members of the forest protection shock teams in the villages are on duty 24/24 hours in high-risk areas.
In addition, Tram Tau commune has increased inspection of slash-and-burn farming at locations bordering production areas and forests, through village meetings to propagate and remind people not to burn fields indiscriminately, not to bring fire into the forest; to guide the safe treatment of vegetation and to clear firebreaks. The commune also organized 100% of people to sign a commitment to prevent and fight forest fires.

Mr. Mua A Chong - Head of Pa Te village said: Up to now, the forest area of the village has been well protected. People are aware that protecting the forest is for themselves, so they do not violate it.

Not only raising people's awareness, Tram Tau also fully prepared firefighting forces and equipment; expanded firebreaks and closely coordinated with forest rangers, the Forest Protection Management Board, and police and military forces in responding to and handling incidents.

When a fire occurs, the "4 on-site" principle is flexibly applied to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible.
Thanks to the drastic intervention, Tram Tau is no longer a hot spot for deforestation and forest fires like before.

The commune government believes that sustainable forest protection must be linked to people's livelihoods. Over the years, Tram Tau has encouraged people to plant production forests, protect forests, and benefit from the forest environmental service payment policy. Many households with additional income have increased their responsibility to the forest.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hoe - Chairman of Tram Tau Commune People's Committee affirmed: Forests are not only resources but also assets and livelihoods of local people.

The dry season is still long with many unpredictable developments. However, the proactiveness of the government and the sense of responsibility of the people are helping to control forest fires in Tram Tau, contributing to maintaining the green color of the forests.
