This morning, June 7, the People's Committee of Huong Hoa district coordinated with the Department of Science and Technology and the Institute of Soil and Agrochemistry to organize a scientific workshop on Scientific basis and practice for registration of geographical indication (GI) "Khe Sanh Coffee" and the system of documents and tools for GI management.

Khe Sanh is a place name, an administrative unit of a town in Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri province. This place has long been famous for its tea coffee products with a total area of about 5,000 hectares, the harvested area is over 4,500 hectares concentrated in the communes of Huong Phung, Huong Loc, Tan Hop, Huc, Khe Sanh town...
With a history of growing tea coffee since the early 20th century, along with the historical location and distinct quality of Khe Sanh tea coffee products, it has gone beyond borders and is currently being exported to many countries around the world .
Identifying coffee as the key crop to promote local socio-economic development, over the years Huong Hoa has had many solutions to support the construction of specialized areas, support coffee growers in applying scientific and technical advances in production, and build clean agricultural areas. Actively supporting businesses to invest in product processing industry right in the area has contributed to promoting the development of raw material areas, solving jobs for workers, and increasing product value.

The workshop was organized to build a scientific and practical basis for registering the GI "Khe Sanh Coffee" for coffee products of Quang Tri province, including: determining the characteristics of the nature and quality of Khe Sanh coffee products; determining the specific factors of natural conditions and people that have a decisive influence on the quality of Khe Sanh coffee; building a GI map "Khe Sanh" for selected coffee products.
At the workshop, experts from the Institute of Soil and Fertilizers presented the scientific basis and practical application of registering the geographical indication “Khe Sanh Coffee”; introduced the brand identity system of the geographical indication “Khe Sanh Coffee”; and drafted the Regulations on management and use of the geographical indication “Khe Sanh Coffee”.
Experts and delegates focused on discussing and contributing opinions on the contents related to the construction of a scientific and practical database to serve as a basis for registering geographical indication protection for Khe Sanh coffee products.
Accordingly, the workshop identified the history of Khe Sanh coffee growing area with nearly 100 years of existence, the reputation of Khe Sanh coffee has been proven over decades and the proof of this is that Khe Sanh coffee has continuously been in the top of Vietnamese specialty coffee competitions since 2020 and the top 5 world specialty coffees in 2022.
The morphology and quality of Khe Sanh coffee products with their own characteristics have been identified. The customs and farming practices based on the knowledge of the people in the coffee growing area have been studied, which determine the specificity of the coffee products.
Analyze the relationship between natural conditions and human factors with the quality of Khe Sanh coffee. Determine the current status map, soil map of Khe Sanh coffee growing area; map of geographical indication protection scope for Khe Sanh coffee at scale 1/10,000...
These are important bases to help localities have a scientific basis to propose to competent authorities to allow protection of the "Khe Sanh" geographical indication for Khe Sanh coffee products in the area of 12 communes of Huong Hoa district.
