The workshop was organized to build a scientific and practical basis for registering the Geographical Indication (GI) "Khe Sanh Coffee" for coffee products of Quang Tri province, including: identifying the specific characteristics and quality of Khe Sanh coffee; identifying the specific natural and human factors that decisively influence the quality of Khe Sanh coffee; and developing a GI map for the selected coffee product.
At the workshop, experts from the Institute of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry presented the scientific and practical basis for registering the geographical indication "Khe Sanh Coffee"; introduced the brand identity system for the geographical indication "Khe Sanh Coffee"; and drafted the Regulations on the management and use of the geographical indication "Khe Sanh Coffee".
Experts and delegates focused their discussions and contributed ideas on issues related to building a scientific and practical database to serve as a basis for registering geographical indication protection for Khe Sanh coffee.
Accordingly, the workshop identified the history of the Khe Sanh coffee growing region, which has existed for nearly 100 years. The reputation of Khe Sanh coffee has been proven over decades, evidenced by the fact that Khe Sanh coffee has consistently ranked among the top in Vietnamese specialty coffee competitions from 2020 to the present, and among the top 5 specialty coffees in the world in 2022.
The morphological characteristics and quality of Khe Sanh coffee have been identified, along with its unique features. Research has shown that the customs and farming practices, based on the knowledge of the local people in the coffee-growing region, determine the distinctiveness of the coffee product.
The study analyzed the relationship between natural conditions and human factors on the quality of Khe Sanh coffee. It identified the current status map, the soil map of the Khe Sanh coffee growing area, and the geographical indication protection map for Khe Sanh coffee at a scale of 1/10,000...
These are important grounds that provide the locality with a scientific basis to request the authorities to grant geographical indication protection for "Khe Sanh" coffee products in the 12 communes of Huong Hoa district.
