Field workshop on new rice varieties Mahy 85 and Smart 56

(GLO)- On the morning of July 31, at the field of An Nhon Tay commune, Mahyco Vietnam Company Limited coordinated with local authorities to organize a field workshop to evaluate the demonstration model of pure rice variety Mahy 85 in the 2025 Summer crop.

Representatives of specialized departments, leaders of some typical communes, cooperatives, farmer cooperative groups in the area and businesses associated with implementing the model attended the workshop.

The demonstration model using Mahy 85 variety was implemented on a land fund of 0.5 ha with 10 participating households. The results showed that Mahy 85 is a purebred rice variety with a short growing period: Winter-Spring crop from 80-85 days, Summer crop from 75-80 days. This variety is especially suitable for areas with water shortages, need for crop rotation, increase crops or are often affected by natural disasters. The rice has good quality, soft rice, and an estimated yield of 65-70 quintals/ha.

According to the plan, on August 2, Mahyco Vietnam Co., Ltd. will continue to organize a workshop to test the demonstration model of Smart 56 rice variety - an improved variety from Mahy 85 at Hoai My field (Hoai Nhon Dong ward). This rice variety has outstanding advantages in productivity and economic efficiency. The model is also deployed on a land fund of 0.5 ha, with 10 households participating. The results show that Smart 56 rice yield reaches 70-80 quintals/ha, 4 quintals/ha higher than mass cultivation.

In particular, both models apply the “alternating wet-dry” irrigation method and comply with the “1 must 6 reductions” technical process, including: using certified rice varieties, reducing the amount of seeds sown, reducing fertilizers, reducing pesticides, reducing irrigation water, reducing post-harvest losses and reducing carbon emissions. In addition, farmers are also encouraged to use organic fertilizers and biological pesticides.

Through the model, people not only access sustainable farming techniques according to SRP (Sustainable Rice Platform) standards, but also begin to get used to keeping electronic production diaries, helping to trace the origin of agricultural products, replacing traditional manual recording methods.

Thanks to synchronous and scientific solutions, households participating in the model have saved 50-60% of seeds compared to traditional production, significantly reducing input costs, while increasing productivity and protecting the environment.
