On August 29, 2024, Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) and the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) held the inauguration ceremony for the 500 kV circuit 3 transmission line project from Quang Trach ( Quang Binh ) to Pho Noi (Hung Yen).

The inauguration ceremony was held both in person and online, with the main venue taking place at the Pho Noi 500 kV substation ( Hung Yen province) and connecting online to 8 other locations in 8 provinces where the project passes through.

The 500kV circuit 3 extension project connecting Quang Trach (Quang Binh) to Pho Noi (Hung Yen) is a key, urgent project of paramount importance to national energy security. Therefore, the Prime Minister has issued decisive directives to all levels, ministries, agencies, and local authorities, urging them to work together.

The 500kV transmission line project (circuit 3) has a total length of approximately 519 km and a total investment of approximately VND 22,356 billion. The project comprises four component projects: Quang Trach – Quynh Luu; Quynh Luu – Thanh Hoa; Thanh Hoa – Nam Dinh 1 Thermal Power Plant; and Nam Dinh 1 Thermal Power Plant – Pho Noi. The component projects commenced in October 2023 and January 2024, respectively.

The project involved excavating over 2.5 million cubic meters of earth and rock, using more than 705,000 cubic meters of concrete, nearly 70,000 tons of foundation reinforcement steel; the total volume of steel pole erection was 139,000 tons; and a total of nearly 14,000 km of various types of power lines were laid.

This is a key, urgent project of great importance to enhance the power transmission capacity through the 500 kV system from Central to Northern Vietnam, increasing the current capacity from 2,500 MW to 5,000 MW, improving the operational stability of the power system, increasing electricity supply to the North in 2025 and beyond, reducing the risk of overloading and congestion on existing 500 kV lines and substations, and contributing to ensuring national energy security.

On the evening of August 27, 2024, the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) and the Central Power Projects Management Board (CPMB), in coordination with relevant units, successfully energized the 500kV circuit 3 transmission line project, specifically the Quang Trach – Quynh Luu section. This resulted in the complete commissioning of the 500kV circuit 3 transmission line from Quang Trach (Quang Binh) to Pho Noi (Hung Yen).
