TPO - After more than a month since the increase in the minimum wage, the prices of essential goods have generally not been pushed up too much, and supermarkets have basically maintained stable prices, ensuring a decent standard of living for the people.
From July 1st, in accordance with Resolution No. 27-NQ/TW of the 7th Central Committee Meeting (12th term), the average salary of cadres, civil servants, and public employees will increase by approximately 30% (including basic salary and allowances).
More than a month after salary adjustments, some essential goods have also increased in price, but not significantly. Surveys at several local markets in Hoan Kiem, Hai Ba Trung, and Dong Da districts show that the prices of vegetables, pork, and beef have increased slightly by 5-10% compared to May and June.
Specifically, pork prices have increased by approximately 10,000-20,000 VND/kg depending on the type. Pork belly and shoulder are around 150,000 VND/kg, while pork leg is 135,000 VND/kg... Similarly, beef prices have also increased, currently around 250,000 VND/kg. Egg prices in markets have increased by 300-500 VND/egg, with chicken eggs costing around 27,000 VND/dozen, and larger eggs reaching 30,000 VND/dozen.
In contrast to local markets, supermarket chains like Winmart, BRG Mart, Hapro, etc., maintain relatively stable prices for essential goods. At BRG Mart, pork shoulder is sold at 134,900 VND/kg, and pork leg at 104,900 VND/kg...
Regarding vegetables in Hanoi, prices are rising sharply. In early August 2024, water spinach increased from 8,000-11,000 VND/bunch to 13,000-15,000 VND/bunch, and lettuce from 20,000-25,000 VND/kg to 40,000 VND/kg... However, this price increase is due to flooding in some vegetable-growing areas in Hanoi, such as Chuong My, Thach That, and Quoc Oai, causing a temporary price hike, and is not a result of wage increases.
Speaking with a reporter from Tien Phong newspaper, a representative of the Haprofood/BRG Mart supermarket chain stated that the company currently has 37 retail stores. Following the July 1st salary increase, the chain's stores are stabilizing their supply of goods to the market, prices are stable, and consumer spending remains normal.
Meanwhile, a representative from Co.opmart Hanoi supermarket added that the company proactively coordinates with suppliers to implement promotional programs at its 800 sales points nationwide. Despite the increase in civil servant salaries, the supermarket maintains stable prices to stimulate consumer demand.

Economist Vu Vinh Phu, former Chairman of the Hanoi Supermarket Association, stated that the issue of rising wages leading to rising prices is a perennial problem. Wage increases are only truly meaningful if prices are kept relatively stable. Essential goods such as electricity, water, gasoline, and food must have their prices controlled or regulated appropriately. This is a matter of great concern to many consumers.
According to a representative from the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, in order to stabilize market prices, the Hanoi People's Committee has issued a plan to stabilize prices of essential goods in 2024, including: rice, pork, chicken, duck, seafood, poultry eggs, processed foods, vegetables, sugar, cooking oil, spices, and milk for children under 6 years old.
According to the Hanoi City Statistics Department, the consumer price index (CPI) in Hanoi in July 2024 increased by 0.51% compared to the previous month and by 5.51% compared to the same period in 2023. The average CPI for the first seven months of 2024 increased by 5.36% compared to the average for the same period in 2023.
In the first seven months of 2024, 10 out of 11 commodity groups saw an increase in the CPI compared to the same period last year. The housing, electricity, water, fuel, and construction materials group increased by 6.19%. The food and catering services group increased by 3.28%. Medicines and medical services increased by 4.15%. Some consumer goods such as hats, shoes, and clothing increased by 1.9%... The postal and telecommunications group, however, saw a decrease of 1.38%.
