On July 1st, the General Surgery Department of Can Tho City General Hospital reported that doctors at the hospital had performed laparoscopic cholecystectomy on a 64-year-old female patient, removing more than 1,100 gallstones from her gallbladder.
Accordingly, patient LTM, born in 1957 (residing in Luc Sy Thanh commune, Tra On district, Vinh Long province) was admitted to Can Tho City General Hospital on the morning of June 26th. After clinical examination and ultrasound, the patient was diagnosed with chronic cholecystitis due to multiple gallstones and was scheduled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

The patient's family stated that about three years ago, the patient was diagnosed with gallstones. However, due to fear of surgery, the condition persisted, and the patient only took over-the-counter medication to alleviate pain. About a month ago, the pain worsened, leading the patient to be admitted to the hospital for treatment and surgery.
Following the surgery, the patient's health gradually stabilized and they recovered well. During the gallbladder removal and incision, doctors discovered more than 1,100 gallstones had formed in the patient's gallbladder.
According to Dr. La Van Phu, Head of the General Surgery Department at Can Tho City General Hospital, this is the case with the largest number of gallstones ever recorded at the hospital. Fortunately, the patient underwent surgery in time. In the case of acute cholecystitis, complications such as necrosis or perforation of the gallbladder, it would be very difficult to save the patient.
Furthermore, Dr. La Van Phu advises that gallstones are a fairly common disease. If diagnosed and treated early with laparoscopic surgery, the results are usually good. Conversely, if left untreated for a long time, it can be life-threatening. Therefore, people who experience pain from gallstones should go to the hospital for early surgery to avoid unfortunate complications.
