In a statement posted on its website on September 24, the ministry said that terrorists had planned to plant 30 bombs with the aim of undermining national security, causing fear among the population, and creating instability.

Intelligence forces raided the base and arrested all members of the terrorist network in the provinces of Tehran, Alborz, and West Azarbaijan who had links to the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).

In 2017, ISIS attacked the Iranian parliament building and the mausoleum of Ayatollah Rohollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, killing at least 17 people and injuring more than 50 others. This was ISIS's first attack on Iranian soil.

The Iranian intelligence agency confirmed that some of them had links to what Iran claims are "Takfiri terrorists" in Syria, or had travel records to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Kurdish region of Iraq.

The statement listed a number of seized items and equipment, including a large quantity of explosives, bombs, materials for making them, 100 detonators, electronic tools and equipment for making time bombs, 17 US-made handguns and ammunition, smart communication devices, satellite equipment, military uniforms, suicide vests, and foreign currency.

This terrorist plot coincided with the protests that took place last fall.

On September 14, 2022, Mahsa Amani, 22, was detained by police on charges of improperly wearing a headscarf and later died from severe head injuries.

However, authorities claimed Amini died of a heart attack, leading her family and the Iranian people to accuse the government of covering up the truth. This sparked protests across the country, posing a major challenge to Iran's security.
